  • The Rock School on Piceance Creek will no longer be used by private groups for commercial sales, the Re-1 school board decided.
  • Retail sales in Meeker during the first three months of 1971 increased 3.5% over the same period in 1970, an increase of $30,000. Total sales in Meeker were $6,000 higher in 1971 than in 1970.

  • The Meeker Herald received a journalism excellence citation from the Associated Press for its coverage of the recent Pathfinders youth camp incident near Ripple Creek Pass. The AP estimates that more than 100 newspapers and TV stations across the country used the Herald’s photos of the incident.
  • A group of medical personnel at a triage center in Meeker High School await the arrival of 28 young people from Ripple Creek Pass. The triage found that many of the youths had strep germs in their throats. The sheriff placed the kids in protective custody.

  • From Washington- The Rio Blanco Plowshare nuclear shot to stimulate the Rio Blanco gas field in northwestern Colorado will probably take place in the fall of 1972 regardless of federal funding.
  • If the Administration oil shale test lease program goes into effect in Dec. of 1972, the population and employment in oil shale country could increase by 80% from 1973-82.

  • The 4,350 acre Zenobia Peak fire, which is about 75 miles northwest of Craig, is now contained.
  • A fire started at Ace-West Trucking complex after welding sparks flew into a nearby path of weeds. Nine firefighters were needed to put out the blaze, but fortunately the fire caused no injuries and little damage to company property.
