Meeker Herald – 125

If ante-election promises could be coined into lawful money, some men would soon be rich. 

At the second-hand store is a curiosity in the shape of a book published in the year 1731. Sandy got it recently in a lot of odds and ends. 

George Lyttle, a brother of ye editor, arrived in Meeker Thursday evening and will tarry a week or two. He is a graduate of pharmacy and is located at Franklin, Pennsylvania.

A heavy frost covered the ground Thursday night while the upper country received about four inches of snow. 

Two federal prohibition officers from Denver made an unexpected visit in Colorado river town last week and were rewarded by capturing about a half dozen stills and as many violators of the Volstead Act.

The low price of gasoline is not likely to continue for many months. Reports of decreased production are now coming from all the big oil fields. It will then, of course, be necessary to put the price up again “in order to encourage increased production.”

“Follow the example of the armed forces and have a chest X-ray.” This is the slogan of the Rio Blanco County Health Council which is sponsoring the Mobile Unit in this County. The Unit will be placed in front of the Light Plant, which is in easy access for everyone who wishes a chest X-ray. Remember, it is the money that the people of Rio Blanco County have given in buying the tuberculosis Christmas Seals that makes it possible to obtain these X-ray pictures free, and take advantage of this opportunity. 

The Buford community are giving a box social at the Buford school house on Friday evening, Oct. 26. The funds from this dance and card party will go to the United War Chest fund of the county.

Construction of a new junior high school building has been established by the community as the number one educational need of the Meeker school district. 

The elk hunting season in Rio Blanco County was off to a slow start as far as numbers were concerned this week.

Rangely Times – 50

Five men were picked up Sunday by the Vernal police following the burglary of the Headquarters Bar and Cafe here early Friday morning. The thieves entered the building through a rear window in a restroom. Taken were two cases of beer, 15 cartons of cigarettes and about $28 in change. 

James Pacheco of Arvada has purchased the Rangely Plumbing and Heating Co. from Howard and Gwen Elam. 

Rio Blanco Herald Times – 25

The Parade Marshal this year was long time Meeker resident and arguably the Cowboy’s number one fan, Nellie Stewart. Mrs. Stewart raised nine children, has 27 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Her oldest child Albert started school in 1947 and her youngest daughter Jean (Gianinetti) graduated in 1974. 

School superintendent of Re-4, Dr. Robert Mullen, and his Christy were the grand marshals honored for their work for the public schools in Rangely. Homecoming royalty were King Josh Rodell and Queen Kristi Cady.

Dr. Dorsett’s high school biology II class recently spent time on the banks and in the water of the White River studying habitat, water temperature and oxygen concentration. Dr. Dorsett reports that the students have had good preparation from Mr. Turner and Mrs. Stewart at the Middle School.
