It wouldn’t be a bad idea if the town council would plant a row of native cottonwood trees around the outside of the town park. These trees will grow. It is doubtful whether any other kind will.

Meeker business houses could be made a lot more attractive by the application of a liberal amount of paint.

The recent damp spell left our streets in very rough condition after the mud dried up, and in order to smooth them down Town Marshal Nichols ran a four-horse leveller over them this weekend.

Work on the warm water swimming pool on the Meeker dome has been going on steadily all week and was completed yesterday evening. There have been many people, during the past week, using the “vapor cave” which was constructed where the water comes out of the pipe. It is just as good a steam bath as you would get at any specialist.

Thomas G. Thomas killed a mountain lion on his ranch Friday last that measured ten feet from tip to tip. It was the largest of its kind ever killed on White River and had become so audacious that it came within sight of Mr. Thomas’ residence and killed and carried off young stock.

This week the Rexall store installed a new ice cream packer. This new equipment is composed of what is known as the “frigid air” system. These packers do away with all the ice, being cooled by continual changing of gas to liquid much the same as an ammonia plant.

Receiving the once over from school nurse Virginia Samuel to see if she has the measles, young Rebecca Barley awaits the decision. More fortunate than 50 of her schoolmates, the second grader was given a clean bill of health. The measles epidemic which has plagued Meeker for the past two weeks seems to be receding. A Colorado Health Department immunization program was given to all school pupils Wednesday.

For those who have been arguing that coal development is a reality that we’re likely to see before oil shale comes along, the activities of the Colo-Wyo Mine, 21 miles northeast of Meeker, could certainly lead one to feel they were right.

RIO BLANCO HERALD TIMES ~ 25 years ago

The new chief of police for the Town of Rangely, Flint Chambers, who was to begin his duties at the end of February, began work a couple of weeks early and hasn’t stopped since.
