Ben Nichols donned the marshal’s badge Wednesday morning.
A few rains during the past week freshened things up considerably in this section. Those who had planted seed were fortunate.
Water will be turned into the town ditch the coming week. The laterals around town are being cleaned out so as to be ready for the water.

After nearly 30 years as express and mail agent in Meeker, Mr. W.E. Saltmarsh has retired. Mr. Saltmarsh says he is only going to attend to the “chickens” and other home chores from now on. “Salty” has been an exceptionally good express man and Harp Bros. will miss his valuable service.
Snow fell to a depth of about six inches Monday night but the sun came out and it disappeared before Tuesday night.
J.B. Fairchilds of Piceance creek was arrested at Ashley a few days ago on a charge of horse stealing and brought to Meeker for trial.

In one of the biggest turnouts ever for a town election, Claude Shults collected almost a 5-1 majority of the votes over Ron Gitchell for the mayorship for 1976-78. In his mild-mannered tone of believing there are a lot of positive aspects to Meeker, Shults collected 510 votes compared to Gitchell’s 94 with the latter blasting almost any and everything he could find wrong with the way the Town was being run. Apparently the townspeople didn’t believe his stories.
Meeker residents as well as out of town people had the opportunity to visit the new Fabric Cottage during their grand opening Friday and Saturday. Iris Franklin and Shirley Harp, co-owners, stated that over 150 visited the new business located at 880 Market St.

338 votes were cast in the Town election. James O. Sinclair, Mayor, with 220 votes against John Neiberger with 118 votes.

In a second joint Meeting of Meeker and Rangely town board members with Rio Blanco County Commissioners, officials agreed to begin work on the wording of a ballot issue to raise the sales tax in the county 1.6 cents, from 1 cent to 2.6 cents.
The Meeker Historical Society met for its quarterly meeting on Sunday, April 1. About 30 people showed up for the potluck lunch meeting. Acting president Gayle (Crawford) Kuhl called the meeting to order.
