• The fruit crop at Grand Junction this year suprasses all previous years. All Colorado should turn out and see our western valleys, which are fast becoming California’s rivals.

• It is now drawing to the season when citizens who have the interests (?) of the county at heart, can be seen about in secluded spots in bunches of twos and threes earnestly discussing how it may be saved, says an exchange. Yes, and the time is already at hand when the willing-to-be-sacrificed aspirant will vilify his probable opponent and ridicule his every action–to get him out of the road.

• J.W. Hugus and Company keep a well conducted General Store. We keep everything that appeals to every home. The best makes of boots and shoes, up-to-date dry goods, the proper things in hats, latest designs in hardware and tinware, modern farm machinery, choice and staple groceries, everything else you need. Come in and talk with us. It won’t harm either of us, and we may be able to sell you something you need. You will find us progressive and anxious to please.

• Benj. A. Spear, mining correspondent of the Salt Lake Tribune, passed thro’ town in the fore part of the week, being on his way to inspect several mining camps of this state—Cripple Creek included. He was well pleased with Meeker’s location and inhabitants, and thinks we’ll have a good-sized town here in due course of time.

• There are already several strings of race horses here from outside points and more expected. It has also been announced that Dave Thompson will ride any and all horses brought in. This will be used to fill in the time between events. Come on all your bronco twisters, street ropers and race horse riders, let’s make this celebration second to none ever held in this state.

• Three autos and one truck broke down on the Meeker Marvine road Sunday and had to be hauled in Monday. It is said bad roads had a good deal to do with the accidents.

• Meeker team met the Vernal boys on the home diamond Friday afternoon and defeated them by the score of 12 to 9. It was hard fought and close game and looked very much like a Vernal victory up to the eighth inning when the Meeker boys rallied and brought home the bacon.

Today’s Chuckle: AGES OF WOMEN: Infant, Little Girl, Miss, Young Woman, Young Woman, Young Woman, Young Woman . . .

• Postmaster Gerald Dickman today announced “CLEAN-UP WEEK” for the Meeker Post Office as part of a nation-wide postal activity announced in Washington by Postmaster General Winton M. Blount. The Postmaster General announced the program Sunday “to establish post offices as a symbol of good housekeeping and as a credit to every community in the nation.”

Dear Editor: Kids have to have something to do or they will find something to do, even if it’s tearing down and burning up and kids who have livestock to take care of usually don’t have time to do much else.

• During a routine Rio Blanco Board of County Commissioners meeting Aug. 14, the commissioners granted a conditional use permit for a shooting range for Seven Lakes Guest Ranch “upriver” from Meeker. The measure generated heated debate at a recent county meeting, but tempers cooled considerably after the ranch guests agreed that the range would be for shotguns only, limited to nine ranch guests at a time, be located half a mile from RBC 8, and be open only from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from June to September. Nobody spoke against the proposal at the commissioners meeting.

• Paul and Renae Neilson’s Ute Terrace subdivision inched another step forward Tuesday night when the Meeker Town Council approved the preliminary subdivision plan. A number of concerns about the subdivision have been raised about the subdivision, none of them major. However, before a final plat may be approved, the Nielsons must address all the concerns “in an acceptable manner to all parties.”

• The Meeker Alternative High School is the official name of both the new education program in Meeker, and the Main Street building that will house the program next door to Cook & Company.

• Rangely’s city council met Monday night in joint session with the School District RE-4 board of education to discuss street improvements planned on Jones Avenue adjoining the high school on the west. It was agreed to widen the street by taking a number of feet from the east side, setting the sidewalks back, etc.

• Sealed bids have been called for by the city of Rangely for leveling the city dump with a bulldozer. Bids will be opened at 8 p.m. on Monday, August 3, 1970, at the City Hall.

Blazin Blazer: When Dee Harvey, of 618 W. Prospect St., started her older model Chevy Blazer Thursday morning, August 10, she got more than she bargained for — smoke began pouring out of the engine. When flames appeared, she ran back into the house and called 911. Police Chief Jerry Reese, Officer Karen Murphy and several members of the Rangely Volunteer Fire Department put out the blaze in about two minutes.

• Lynn Mitton, the general manager and CEO of Deseret Generation and Transmission, announced plans to reorganize and reduce Deseret’s work force by October 2, 1995. The announcement, made Monday, Aug. 14, will mean the end of 61 jobs between Bonanza Power Plant near Vernal, Utah, and at the cooperative’s main office in Sandy.
