• Mr. McHatton and niece — Mrs. Walbridge, returned from Salt Lake Saturday evening. The Mormon jubilee was a grand affair and well worth seeing, but the most interesting feature (to Mac) was the opportunity of hearing Bryan speak. The great champion of the people’s rights didn’t disappoint his White River hearers.
• Good government in cities is made difficult, not alone by lack of conscience, but also by lack of wisdom. “When the thieves are power the people are swindled; and with only one exception, when the reformers have been put in power, matters have been no better, and some cases worse.”

• Are you going forward or backward? This will be the question you will be called on to answer, Mr. and Mrs. Taxpayer. By the character of your vote you will indicate whether you favor building up our Public School System or letting it retrograde. At this date boys and girls don’t get very far in Life’s struggle without an education. Think of this. Bond election, Aug. 21.
• A.A. Brigman, president of the Raven Oil & Refining Company, was in Meeker early part of the week attending to business matters. Mr. Brigman reports that the Standard people are coming back to Rangely to resume operations. That’s a very good sign.
• A road petition with 26 signers was received asking that the present traveled road up South Fork of White River to Still Water bridge be made a county road ad the road from there on the east side of the river to the mouth of the canyon be opened up and made a county road.

• The photographer missed a nice smile the first time but Tracy Dawn Anderson came back with another one to celebrate her first birthday, July 28. Tracy’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Anderson of Powell Park, also have a 2-year-old son named Travis.

• The Meeker Fire Protection District needs to either remodel and expand the present fire house to make room for the town ambulances, or build a new fire station that will serve Meeker for many years into the future. A larger fire station was made necessary when Pioneers Hospital embarded on a building plan for a new clinic and extensive hospital renovations.
• Young shooters participated in the 4-H shootoff last weekend at the Sportsmens Club range in Meeker. Coe Uphoff took top honors in the shotgun senior devision, while Kevin Dunbar won shotgun junior honors. Cory Ruchti took second in seniors, Greg Schram won third place, and Landon Smith paced fourth. Zach Cook came in second in the shotgun junior division.

• CNCC’s Dr. Richard Knaub directs several canoes along the shore of Kenney Reservoir. The event was part of the Youth and Natural Resources field trip to Rangely. Knaub put the students through their paces upon the water, including an inadvertent canoe rescue — after one boat capsized.
