The Rio Blanco County High School will open on Sept. 7. Parents and pupils may meet the principal or superintendent at the high school Friday and Saturday afternoons for consultation.

A traveling sign painter was in town this week and as a result several of the stores are displaying new signs. The workmanship was good.

John Kenney and Everett Rector of Rangely were attending to court business in town most of the week.

Ice is getting to be a scarce commodity about Meeker. Those who have any are holding on to it for fear of running out before the new crop comes in.

The forest fires raging in the eastern end of Garfield County have finally extended to the south fork of White River. At times, Meeker is enveloped in heavy smoke and the odor of burning pines is easily perceptible.

The rural residents of the White River Valley are much interested in the Rural Electrification plan. 

The Sather Jewelry Store which is to be located in the Romney building next door to the Rio Theatre will open for business Tuesday, Sept. 4.

President Gerald Ford pointed to a question he had about oil shale at the Paraho Oil Shale Demonstration project near Rifle this past Monday. Here the question of how the Western Slope is to handle the growth impact received the President’s attention with no real answers coming to surface. 

A totally demolished 1975 Chevrolet was pulled out of the White River in which three teenagers died as the result of the one-car accident three miles east of Meeker early last Saturday morning. Two other teenagers received serious injuries while a third miraculously escaped with minor cuts and bruises. 

Kay Dora Bivens of Meeker has been selected for inclusion in the 1975 edition of “Outstanding Young Women of America.”

Gas customers will see a change on their August 31 gas bills. The rate hike was painstakingly agreed to by the Rangely Town Council in a resolution on Tuesday night. Leon Brown addressed the council with concerns that the twenty-five cents per CCF was a little too steep for customers to bear all at once. 

A pair of sisters represented Meeker at the statewide American Coed Pageant in Denver on July 28 and 29, 2000. Jessa Mehlhoff, age 11, was a State Finalist in the Preteen Division (ages 10-12). Jade Mehlhoff, age 9, was a State Finalist in the Sweetheart Division (ages 7-9).

“There is enough water available for oil shale development,” according to William E. Moffett, vice president — public relations for Gulf Oil Corporation.

There are several lots around Town upon which the excessive growth of weeds and/or the accumulation of other trash have become a problem.
