• The open season for the killing of deer begins next Wednesday.
• Six new dwelling houses are now underway in different parts of the town, and ground will soon be broken for the new Methodist church at the southeast corner of Market and Fifth streets (east of the Miller house).

• Now comes school. Schooling is like air now-a-days. It is free to everybody, and it is like air again because you simply can’t get along without it. A boy with one leg can win a race easier than a boy without education can make a success in life. Try and get all the education you can.

• Lynn Whiteman of Meeker has been selected as announcer for the Beef Cattle Show at the Colorado State Fair 100th anniversary celebration.
• Mary K. Villa, summer student at the University of Northern Colorado, returned home Saturday for the celebration of her 21st birthday with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Villa and brother John.

• Meeker Mayor Bill Dunham won a “cow pie” for participating in the Mayor’s Pie Judging at the county fair. Dunham and Rangely Mayor Don Peach sample a range of tasty pies and selected a pie backed by Maureen Moody, 10, as the winner.
• The new Range Call Royalty: Beth Huff is the 1998 Range Call Queen with her attendants Miranda Jackson, Roxie Long and Michelle Ekstrom.
• County Commissioners Joe Collins, Don Davis and Kim Cook nibbled cookies in public during the county fair Commissioners Cook Contest. In the end, Tanisha Gates won their hearts and taste buds, and $25.

• At a special meeting of the Rangely Sanitation Board held Monday evening, Harry H. Peacock and J.R. “Hap” Jantzen were accepted as directors of that board.
• An increase in Colorado’s bear population combined with a shortage of wild berries and othe natural foods have created a potential dangerous situation for campers in the mountainous areas of the state.

• Every year since 1983 the Town of Rangely has celebrated Septemberfest and this year is no exception. The four-day event has been designed for the community to get together and have a good time.
• The Blue Mountain Energy (Deserado Mine) rescue team recently competed in a mine rescue competition Aug. 5-7 in Price, Utah. The Deserado Black team, captained by Tony Gabossi, took away the top honor.
