The Meeker Herald ~ 125 years ago

Two trout poachers, Charles Harrison and Edward Gorman, were nailed at Trappers Lake, on Tuesday, with 77 pounds of trout in their possession, by a Glenwood deputy game warden. They pleaded guilty, and now languish in jail in default payment of $67.50 fine and costs for each one. A prominent Meekerite, who was in Glenwood two weeks ago, was instrumental in having the men arrested.

Among the business to be transacted by the woodmen at their meeting this evening is the election of clerk to succeed Rev. F L. Davis, who will leave Meeker the latter part of the month.

Mr. and Mrs. Thos. H. Iles came in from their Routt county ranch Thursday, bringing in their youngest son, Thomas Jr., who had a broken arm, resulting from a fall from his pet Shetland pony the day previous. Medical help was summoned at once, and although suffering excruciating pain the first night, the little one is now resting easier.

Until people got out yesterday morning, they did not understand why St. James church bells were tolled. The Episcolpal church bells are always tolled at the death of a president.

Reports come in that carloads of fine cherries are going to waste in the Montrose district.

Fred Slifka found a bunch of wild strawberries in his pasture on Limekiln this week that had 20 berries, as large as red raspberries, on one stem. The berries are unusually large this year and lots of them.

The worst electrical storm in the history of northwestern Colorado visited our neighboring town Craig. The oldest inhabitant had never seen anything quite so bad. One person was killed by lightning and much worse damage was done.

Among the public spirited matters taken up by our Lions Club is the improvement of our public camping grounds. A very praiseworthy movement.

General Road-Overseer Kirk Shaw started the drags on county roads after Tuesday’s rain storms.

Saturday evening, a family reunion for members of Mrs. Mina Agee’s family was enjoyed at the Meeker City Park.

Although it appears Cindy Ryan is going to miss the ball, this is not her usual style as she is a very good catcher. The girls softball team captured first place in last week’s league tournament in Craig and will now represent Meeker in state competition.

“You don’t think I’d marry the offspring of a dipso-maniac, do you?” says Monroe Murgatroyed to Mrs. Upson Asterbilt in last week’s melodrama. An enthusiastic audience both Friday and Saturday nights booed the villain, cheered the hero and laughed hysterically at the antics of Mookie Maguggins.

It was the kick-off to the 1998 Rio Blanco County Fair on Saturday when young sharpshooters from across the county converged on the Sportsmen’s Club range in Meeker for the 4-H shooting competition.

Edye Posey and Medic Adams held a young dog while Meeker police officer Don Elliott attempts to splint the pup’s broken right hind leg. Posey was in the backyard of her home in the mobile home development near the Tenth Street bridge late Saturday afternoon when she heard someone apparently firing either a shotgun or larger-caliber rifle or handgun from the bluff across the White River. She then heard a dog howling in pain and ran to the bridge to see the badly injured hound on the bridge, bleeding heavily. Judging from the direction of the shots, it appears that the shooter was firing at the dog on the bridge.

As expected, the town of Meeker gave itself permission to operate a community recycling center at Fifth and Water streets.

Congratulations to Barbra Bailey of Meeker on winning $10,000 playing the Colorado Lottery’s High Roller game.

Rangely Times ~ 50 years ago

Rangely Standard Service reported a burglary occurring sometime Saturday night when the thief entered the station through a west window and stole approximately $180 cash.

A hunters safety course will be held at Rangely College from Aug. 6-10 for all those who are interested.

Cadet David Menge quickly rappels his way down the Recondo Tower. He is one of 802 cadets attending the 1973 Advanced ROTC Camp.

The Rangely 4-H Horsemen took an overnight trail ride Friday and Saturday and it was enjoyed by all.

Special praise is extended to Kaylee Anne Ridings who won the Top Hand award for “outstanding” participant with sheep project. This award is given to the 4-H member who places highest in the project interview, showmanship, and knowledge test, Kaylee should be very proud for scoring 296 points out of the possible 300. She also won the Herdsman award for taking care of her sheep project and second place in Junior Showmanship.

Dennis Unrein was the spotter at the VFW benefit auction on behalf of May Findlay over the weekend. Auctioneer Bryce Purkey plies his unusual craft in the background. Auction proceeds will help Findlay pay off some medical expenses.

Andre “Ace” Cash has signed an athletic scholarship to play basketball for the University of North Dakota.
