County, Days Gone By

The Meeker Herald – 125 years ago

  • Walter James had a rather exciting adventure with a mountain lion on Saturday. He had shot and wounded the puma, which was a large one, when it turned on him and was only a few yards away when a well-directed shot stopped its onward rush. Albert Proctor happened to be in the vicinity at the time with his Kodak and got one or two good snapshots at the exciting scenes as they were being enacted.
  • Speaking of ways to put more money in circulation, how about a law compelling every millionaire to establish and maintain a daily newspaper?

The Meeker Herald – 100 years ago

  • Boys, now’s a good time to get married. Provisions are coming down and Claude Wilson reports that he has a lot of unused marriage licenses, which he will dispose of at reduced rates.
  • Now’s a good time to put in practice some of that stuff you have been preaching: Help carry the other fellow’s load.
  • We take it for granted that very few people in the county will have to pay an excess profit tax this year.

The Meeker Herald – 50 years ago

  • Today’s chuckle: One advantage of being bald is that you can comb your hair with a washcloth. Right off hand we cannot think of another.
  • One of Meeker’s talented musicians, Kay Merriam, now a member of the U.S. Navy, is making quite a name in the entertainment field for himself and members of his eight piece band, known as “The Trilogy.”
  • A.Oldland and Company: Pantyhose, a great gift to give every girl on your list, says Santa. We second the motion. Select from our gay array.

The Meeker Herald – 25 years ago

  • n It was a hoax: the federal government is not offering dividends or any other money to veterans who were covered by military life insurance programs in the past.
  • Representatives from the senior class presented their plans for the senior class trip next year. The students are planning a fun time at Lake Powell; they alert the school board at about this time every year just to get the board’s blessing to proceed with the planning and fundraising.

Rangely Times – 50 years ago

  • Donna Wardell delicately placed the final brushstrokes on her striking mural in City Hall. Her artwork creates a refreshing, aesthetic dimension to the town. This, the seventh painting Wardell has done to help beautify the city, will be her last until spring of next year.
  • Fifteen-year-old Brian Fortunato went on his first elk hunting trip during the second season and bagged his elk opening day, Oct. 21, in Area 3 near Maybell, Colorado. The 6×5 bull was a fine trophy for the young man’s first hunt.

Rangely Times – 25 years ago

  • The Rio Blanco Chariot Racing Association has prepared a schedule of races for the coming weekend, which are the best race meets ever in Rio Blanco County.
  • Fifty years ago today this country was known as a melting pot. Today it resembles a pressure cooker.
  • The tape player-recorder will be on display at Bestway next week. Tickets may be purchased there for the purpose of raising funds for the Rangely Museum.
