A rumor was current on the streets yesterday that Vice President-elect Roosevelt and a large party of eastern nabobs had engaged rooms at the Meeker hotel for the latter part of January, preparatory to a lion hunt in those parts.
Last week the Herald overlooked the fact that Dr. French umpired the football game on Thanksgiving Day and that J.D. Miller acted as referee. The doctor is an old University of Pennsylvania football man, and knows the game from A to Z.

What possibly was the third largest fire loss suffered by Meeker during its fifty years of existence occurred on Monday morning of this week when the Meeker flour mill burned to the ground.
And once again our roads are dry and it looks as if we might have a dusty Christmas.
Furman Dunham this week caught a large coyote on Coal Creek which measured five and a half feet after it was skinned out.

The stork visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Barney on Nov. 30, leaving them a fine baby boy who has been named Lynn Ben Barney. The baby was born at St. Mary’s hospital in Grand Junction.
A business deal was closed last week whereby Mrs. Ann Sanderson has sold her Meeker Cafe and Cocktail Lounge to two businessmen from eastern Colorado. The men purchasing the Meeker Cafe were Mr. Sam B. Adams of Golden, Colorado, and Dr. Steinhardt of Denver.

Last night, Shell Oil Company officials for the C-b tract shale oil project dropped a bomb amidst town and county officials and planners by announcing that “in fact of a long list of obstacles” efforts will be curtailed, for the present, towards the development of this project. As a result the planned 200-300 main work force planned for this coming summer of 1976 will probably not materialize until the summer of 1977.
Museum curator Dorothy Herring reports 1,785 visitors have signed the register since September 1, which did not include the hunters.
Thank God somebody had the sense to build the “liar’s bench” on the sunny side of the street. Located on 6th and Main, the bench has been a favorite get-together spot for both young and old for many, many years. How the bench got its name is somewhat of a mystery. Built by Joe Neal some 20 years ago, the bench is just a tattered and knife scarred wooden plank in between a couple of metal bars with lots of initials carved on it.

This year the fire at the Municipal Garage destroyed all the Christmas decorations. Because of the last of town decorations, the Town Council and the Chamber of Commerce are sponsoring the first annual business Christmas decoration contest.
Rio Blanco County Commissions approved the formation of a Western Rio Blanco Metropolitan Park and Recreation District at a public hearing held Dec. 1.

Officials at American Soda officially opened business last week by sending out three rail cars of the purest soda ash on the market. The ash is mined in Rio Blanco County between Meeker and Rangely and processed in Garfield County at Parachute.
Soon your favorite convenience store will have a new name. In 1998, the Kroger Company of Mini Mart and Loaf ‘N Jug Convenience Store Chains, consolidated the two companies into a single company made up of Mini Mart and Loaf ‘N Jug Stores. Mini Mart stores in Colorado are being renamed to Loaf ‘N Jug.
