Meeker Herald ~ 125 years ago

In expressing himself to the voters the candidate should prepay the freight if he expects to get there.

The ice harvest is now in full blast.

The weather was cold and disagreeable during the past week, the thermometer being generally below zero.

Meeker Herald ~ 100 years ago

During the past few weeks The Herald has received a number of articles and communications (intended for publication, no doubt) which did not bear the signature of the writer at the end of the article. This office, in keeping with all well regulated newspaper establishments, pays no attention to articles with are not signed by the author.

Last Sunday morning opened with about six inches of snow on the ground. Weather then turned cold and Monday morning showed the thermometer registering 11 below zero; Tuesday it was 14 below; Wednesday, 18 below; Thursday 12 below.

Energy chief William E. Simon has ordered a 6-degree cut in home heating and put service stations last in line for gasoline. Simon signed regulations controlling and virtually rationing the distribution of oil and its products just before the midnight Thursday deadline.

Rio Blanco Golf Association has reached its goal of $3,000 to help pay 1973’s interest on the FHA loan.

For the past two years, American Soda has been testing a process in which hot water is forced down a well under high pressure. The hot water dissolves the naturally occurring sodium bicarbonate — baking soda — found in the Piceance Basin. The soda-laden water is then sucked out, and when the water cools the sodium bicarb precipitates out. It is then shipped to customers around the world. It was a full house when representatives of American Soda convened its first public meeting to discuss the firm’s plan to build a large-scale soda ash solution mining operation in the Piceance Basin (for out of town readers, it is pronounced Pee-Ahnce).

Joe Carstens retired after 44 years with the County Road and Bridge Department. Carstens is believed to have served Rio Blanco County longer than any other person has ever worked for the agency.

RANGELY TIMES ~ 50 years ago

Reasons for the poor reception here of Salt Lake City television channels will be explained in detail in next week’s Times.

I believe that 1973 can well be termed “The Impossible Year,” now that it’s over. It started out well with the end of the Vietnam War in January but from there on not too much good can be said about it. But I guess people always play up the bad side of things. Nobody ever puts out a sign that says “Nice Dog.”

RANGELY TIMES ~ 25 years ago

Each Rangely kindergarten and preschool child received a free sports helmet Tuesday. Ms. Dorothy Morrison made the helmets a reality when she wrote and received a grant to purchase the helmets.

Alice Knowles is the new advertising manager for the Rangely Times. Sandy Wilson is the new associate editor of the Rangely Times.
