The Meeker Herald ~ 125 years ago

A typical “Wandering Willie” went through town Monday, walking in from Rifle and going north at a two-mile-an-hour aint. “Ragged Jack” wasn’t in it. 

Water Commissioner Moog reports less trouble with ranchmen as the summer advances. Not on account of rain, but because the ground is getting so well soaked up that the water gets back into the creeks.

Some of the street crossings about town are in horrible shape, and our city dads should do something soon. 

Waterman Jones is now making daily rounds with ice. This is the first time this business has been attempted, and as there are so  many people who don’t put up the ice, it should meet with success.

WIth the assurance that the Moffat Tunnel will be built, it is also assured that the Bamberger railroad will be built. 

Most all the farmers are well underway with their first cutting. On the Mesa is the poorest crop we have yet seen and it is in pretty bad shape. The main cause was trouble on the Miller Creek ditch which broke just when it was needed most. 

An unusual accident occurred to a Manitoba woman when she lost the sight of one eye while feeding several chickens at the rear of her home. She was leaning over to place a hen in its coop, when an angry rooster pecked at her eye, destroying it. She was treated by a local doctor who stated that the operation was necessary to save the sight of her other eye. 

The local ball team will go to Grand Valley Sunday and play ball at the point. If they can win from Valley they will be slope champions. 

Recent rains laid the dust on the new road work in Danforth canyon.

The emergency notice about the girl being bitten by a dog in front of Circle K store last week was promptly answered by two parties, police department spokesman report. One of the dogs has been vaccinated while the other hasn’t and being quarantined for observation. We’d like to thank the people who called the police department as it saved the little girl from going through a series of painful shots. 

A storm in which lightning struck a haystack late Thursday afternoon, summoned the Meeker Fire Department to the Mesa five miles south of Town. Upon arriving at the scene of the Grant Nielsen property, the fire was blazing away and firemen were able to save only a small proportion of estimated 30 ton of hay… Craig Neilson estimated the loss around $1,500 and stated that had the phone worked, a lot of the stack could have been saved. 

Otto Shults of Chyenne and his friend Al Reed of Fort Collins recently visited over the weekend with Otto’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Shults and with them attended the Grange picnic held at the City Park Sunday.

Greta, a sheriff’s department drug sniffer, checks out a pickup truck on Colorado 13 just outside of Meeker earlier this week. The dog and her handler, deputy Rodney Gerloff, were called to the scene after Meeker police chief Si Woodruff apprehended the two men in the truck in connection to an incident at the town water treatment plant. 

The Meeker Youth Baseball Program will host the Northwest Colorado Baseball Tournament this weekend at paintbrush park. Teams from Rangely, Craig, Hayden and Meeker will compete in three age divisions. 

The 1998 Rio Blanco County 4-H Fashion Revue was held this past Saturday in Meeker. The Re-1 School Administration Building Gymnasium was decorated with a Ferris Wheel and lights for the “Carnival of Fashion”

The Tri-State Generation and Transmission Company ( the firm that supplies the wholesale electricity to White River Electric Association) may shut off power to portions of eastern Rio Blanco County, including Meeker, if the statewide heat emergency continues. 

Rangely Times ~ 50 years ago

Almost 44,000 applications for cow elk licenses and for licenses in specified elk areas were received by the Colorado Division of Wildlife for its public drawings… With the record setting number of applications received, Paul Schuab, Wildlife Division administrative assistant reported that about 4,000 refunds will have to be made. 

Think you can’t arrange flowers? The Rangely Garden Club will prove that you can. Mrs Jane Francis, Home Economist, will have an exciting flower demonstration. She believes a few simple points  on the art of arranging and the care of keeping the fresh cut flowers will make a pro of any person. 

Nettie Jean AuMiller, a graduate of Rangely High School, was named this week as one of the winners of Outstanding Business Awards from Stevens Lake City and Ogden announced Jack M. Stevens, president.

Last week Jeff swam in Montrose from July 17-19. He was the only Rangely Hurricane to compete there. With 14 teams and more than 350 swimmers, the competition was tough. 

From California to Bosnia newly named campus police officer at Colorado Northwestern Community College Scott Heugly has had vast experience in law enforcement. 

The weather at Cheyenne Frontier Days was hot and muggy. The streets were lined with folks waiting to watch the parade. Part of that parade was Roxie Long and Miranda Jackson, who sang continuously down the parade route, promoting Free Entertainment.
