Meeker Herald ~ 125 years ago

From all directions comes word that crowds from the four points of the compass will be in Meeker on the Fourth.

The telephone will be in operation for the Fourth of July. George Hald, the manager of the Hugus company at Rifle, has the construction of the line in hand and a large force of men are now at work erecting the poles.

John B. Goff is back from Colorado Springs, Denver, and other points, where he booked a large number of hunting parties, who will visit Marvine Lodge and upper White during the coming season.

J W C Shepherd is the new bookkeeper for A Oldland & Company. Herbert Gordon who has held the position since last January, resigned the first of the week.

Mr. Pinkstaff, tooldresser on the Thornburg well, was brought to town yesterday with a mangled finger which was smashed by a large wrench. It is not certain as yet whether he will loose all of the finger or not.

Results of the population census for Meeker, conducted by the Meeker High School senior class last May, were disclosed by the Rio Blanco County Planning Office. Their total count was 1,711.

J.P. Sheridan, a 1960 graduate of Meeker High School has accepted the position, effective June 1, 1975, as the Assistant Supervisor for the Management Information Systems, Colorado State Board for Community Colleges and Occupational Education in Denver, CO.

Mrs. Audrey Oldland and her daughter, Mrs. Mary Washburn, returned home Saturday after spending the previous four days in Denver attending the State P.E.O. convention at the Marriott Hotel.

The Rio Blanco County Democratic vacancy committee has designated Reed Kelley as their candidate for the east end county commission seat being vacated by Joe Collins.

Leaders of the National High School Rodeo Association (NHSRA), the oldest youth rodeo organization in America, appointed Krista Norell of Meeker to the Wrangler High School All Star Rodeo Team.

Rich and Mary Beth Lyttle celebrated their 50th anniversary on June 18.

All Rangely residents are urged to conserve in the use of water during the present crisis at the water plant. As soon as the water plant is up to capacity, they will be notified and can return to normal use.

Funeral services were held June 17 for Rosa M. Hilkey, aged 91, at the Rangely Christian Church with Rev. George Menge in charge of services.

Jason Gibbs recently returned home to Rangely after serving a two year mission in Indiana for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

President Gordon B. Hinckley of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints will celebrate his 90th birthday on June 23.

The Colorado Wildlife Commission Thursday approved more than 106,000 antlerless and either-sex drawing elk licenses for the 2000 big game season, the most ever.
