125 years ago

• County Surveyor Moog returned from Rangely, on Saturday evening, where he laid out approaches to the new bridge and surveyed a road from the north side of White River to connect the Rangely road with the old Thornburg road.

• The town council held a meeting on Monday evening, and in addition to routine business considered a petition presented by some number of citizens asking that some action be taken regarding the Sulphur Creek outlet.

100 years ago

• Last Saturday, a fire was discovered in the Meeker Hotel block in the rear of the offices occupied by T. B. Scott. The origin of the fire is a mystery.

• P.J. Kirwan, the Glenwood photographer, is due in Meeker this spring- probably about the last of April. He is one of the best photographers in the state.

• Of the postseason aerial census counts completed Jan. 18th, it appears that both the Main White River and South White River areas show a substantial increase in the number of elk. 

• Lynn Pierce, guest speaker from Greeley, put on a slide presentation to sell local businessmen the idea of “Putting meeker on the Map” by advertising on the Travelaide Tour maps for Interstate Travel which are distributed from Chicago to Reno.

• Two Meeker families have formally declared their intentions to sue the Meeker School District for $10 million each. Both families also said in their Notice of Claim letters that they intend to sue every school board member, and the district superintendent individually for unspecified compensatory and punitive damages. 

• Meeker student, Lindsey Cook, missed a free trip to the National Hoop Shoot Contest by one basket in the Elk’s Club Regional Contest this weekend at Wheat Ridge High School.

• Attorneys for four Rangely College students, charged with assault and battery, were granted a request for a change of venue after appearing in County Court in Meeker on March 3rd and they will now appear in Pitkin County Court in Aspen on March 21.

• Irvin Dean Anderson, Rangely Hospital administrator for the past four years, resigned his position effective April 10 to accept a position as administrator in a Utah hospital.

• The multi-agency investigation into the Mar. 6 slaying of a Vernal man produced three new suspects this week.

• Comet Hale-Bopp shimmers against a Blue Mountain backdrop on Mar. 17 atop Melen Hill.
