The Meeker Herald ~ 125 years ago

– Mr. Pfeiffer’s Cleveland bay stallion is now in Meeker. Those wishing to see a fine thoroughbred horse should call at the Pioneer Stables.

– Thos. H. Iles’ cattle went through town Tuesday, bound for Axial basin. They are one and two year old steers in fair condition, and came from Arizona.

– There is no substitute for butterfat.

– Dr. Hunsaker went to Denver this week with a carload of hogs belonging to Fred Gibble and himself.

– Gibble and Hunsaker have opened the former Wallace meat and produce market in Baer block. Fred can raise most of the pork needed on his Flag Creek farm.

– 49 members of the MHS Class of 1973 will be awarded their high school diplomas during formal ceremonies at the MHS auditorium tonight at 8 p.m.

– Trout to stock fishponds are available to landowners in the White River Soil Conservation District through arrangements with the Silver Spring Trout Farm at Montrose.

– We note here with sadness the passing of K. James Cook, who for 34 years was editor and publisher of The Meeker Herald. He died May 16 after a battle with cancer at age 69.

– The eighth grade class recently started a recycling program and recycled nearly 412 pounds of paper. 

Rangely Times ~ 50 years ago

– Town Manager Bruce Barker this week urged residents to notify him of any large items to be picked up by town crews in the annual Clean-Up Drive which ends Friday.

– The Rangely Sanitation District Board of Directors met Tuesday night in regular session and voted to raise the sewer tap fees and the monthly swerve charge, effective July 1, 1973.

– There are many moments to remember from the 1998 RHS Graduation ceremony. Tales about practical jokes from Rangely’s brightest students, a speech about excellence, and mistimed “hat throwing.”

– Bob Tobin, a retired USGS Hydrologist turned astronomy enthusiast, gave some of the alternative students a lesson about the stars.He is just one of the many people who contribute their time and experience to help enrich the student’s education.
