Meeker Herald ~ 125 years ago

Rev. William John and family this week moved into the Oldland house, which was recently fitted up in elegant shape.

Yesterday Boyd Walbridge began moving his household effects from the Flemming house, where he has lived over a decade, to the Riley place corner of Fourth and Park Avenue. Mr. and Mrs. Walbridge will be at home to their friends in a week or so.

The fifth annual Stray Day is near at hand and the various committees are at work getting everything in readiness for this big Fall Round-up of the Stockmen of Northwestern Colorado. All strays are to be brought to the Wilber Drift Gate on the morning of December 18th and will be worked that morning. Fritz Kracht in charge.

C.T. and Milo Love of Piceance were on the Denver Market last week.

Last Friday morning Mrs. R. C. Russell called the sheriff’s office and asked that they investigate a car which had been left at their place the night before. Undersheriff Clyde Stepheson went out and checked on the car which was a Chevrolet with a Garfield county license. When he reported the car it was found that it had been stolen recently from Reigan Motor Company at RIfle.

Mr. and Mrs. Matt Villa were in from their Strawberry ranch Monday shopping and visiting in town for a few hours.

With no advance warning, a 3-foot by 3-foot cast iron gas meter exploded, killing one man and injuring 9 others, three of them seriously, about 2 p.m. Friday, two miles west of Rock School on Piceance Creek.

Inge’s Kitchen is located in the historic old Watson house, on the corner of 5th and Park in Meeker. The abstract on the house goes back to 1887. It was built by Thomas Watson. He was the owner and operator of the Meeker Mercantile on the corner of 5th and Main, which is now the location of the Independent Lumber Co.

RANGELY TIMES ~ 50 years ago

In memory of the lives of Dr. David Meens and Mrs. Rose Hilkey, a watercolor has been hung in the lobby of the Rangely District Hospital by friends of the two. The talented Mrs. Rochard Bock is the artist and her painting is of the White River Valley looking east of Rangely.

Good men have left Rangely because they have offended a select group who know how to operate the grapevine. Don’t let this happen. Become informed. Check the records. The grapevine will only flourish in apathy.

RIO BLANCO HERALD TIMES ~ 25 years ago

Travis Stewart, a 1991 Meeker High School graduate and state wrestling champion, was shot in the chest with a .357 Magnum handgun last Friday morning while on duty as a deputy for Arapahoe County. Thanks to his bulletproof vest, he is alive to tell the story.

With all the negative publicity given the Meeker sports program in the recent past, I thought your readers would like to hear a bit of praise for a change. The praise is of a Meeker football product, a young man named Andy Coryell. Andy was recently named offensive player of the year in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. He has since led his team, the Mesa State College Mavericks, to the NCAA Division II national playoffs and first round victory over a highly touted Northeast Oklahoma team.
