President McKinley is Dead! Passed away at 12:15 this morning. Every evidence of profound grief in this community over the sad event.
As the bell in St. James church tower commenced tolling yesterday afternoon, a suspicion crept into the minds of Meekerites that bad news was received. “What’s the church bell tolling for?” was the general inquiry, and immediately the reply went from mouth to mouth – “The president is dead.”

Our neighboring town of Craig is about to add another to the long list of Colorado Days. It will be called Prairie Dog and Badger Day, and if it be the means of infusing life into the crusade on prairie dogs we’ll all hail it with joy. But – maybe they’re just poking fun at Steamboat and Hayden, over there.

This week work was completed in filling the depression on the corner of Main and Fourth street and grading the same up to the new cement crossing. Dirt was removed and filled in with gravel to the depth of about a foot. As this corner has always been a big mud hole during raining weather and the Spring thawing this work will do away with this past nuisance and be a noticeable street improvement.
Lieut. George H. Lyttle and Mrs. James Lyttle left Wednesday for San Francisco. From that place Mrs. Lyttle will sail for Honolulu to make an extended visit with Lieut. Hugh Lyttle and wife. George will proceed from Frisco to San Diego to report for duty with the Pacific Fleet Destroyer Squadron.
We are sure getting tired of trying to predict the weather.

Support beams for the green metal building that will enclose Meeker’s new sewer plant went up this week as the project moves into its final phases.
Master plan finally ‘yawn’ adopted. As the cartoon above indicates, it has been quite a while for the county’s master plan to take shape. In fact, it’s been two years ago at the start of this month. A sad note might enter the picture here, though, in that the State now has a two-inch thick book on what should be included in a county’s master plan. We just hope they agree with us for once instead of us with them, or we’d have to agree with Phil Jensen’s philosophy of dealing with big government. “Tell them we’re working on it … and stuff it in File 13.”

The Rangely Sanitation District received a $46,000 draft from State Oil Shale Lease Fund to pay for preliminary design engineering costs.
Tuesday, August 31, five members showed up for a beautiful round of golf. Meb Wardell and June Dotson tied for honors by guessing their scores on the last three holes.
Scrooge had a good idea. He just carried it too far. Be crafty. Keep your money in a savings account. Where it’s safe. Earns high interest. And is handy when you want to buy some of the good things in life. No humbug!

Idaho teen wins Meeker Classic. Part-time college freshman Derek Fisher and dog Heidi were the only contestants to complete the prescribed course in less than 30 minutes.
A sad day for Rangely: Dear Editor, Make no mistake about it. Let’s not mince words or try and candy coat it. Sandy Wilson was fired by the new publisher of the soon to be no more Rangely Times, Kerry Murdoch, for no other reason than she was running for county commissioner. He felt there would be a conflict of interest, even though Sandy never covered county issues and there was no rule against it.
