Meeker Herald ~ 125 years ago

If the political liar could be eliminated from our campaigns, it would be a long step towards cleaner politics. The man who lies to obtain a business end gets the contempt of all respectable persons. Why shouldn’t the same rule hold good in politics?

Equinoctial storms were slightly in evidence the past few days.

Meeker is “enjoying” a sugar famine. None to be had at Rifle, New Castle or Glenwood, either.

The editor of this paper is on the sick list latter part of this week, and is under the doctor’s care, hence the delay in getting to press, and please overlook any errors. Thank you.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Delaney of Glenwood motored over last Saturday and spent a few days with the Oldland family.

Of course we are all “idealists.” Doesn’t “our leading citizens” usually mean “our richest man”?

Mr. Freeman Fairfield, former Meeker boy, who is now an oil company executive in Long Beach, California, last week sent a check to County Superintendent Josephine Holland with which to purchase one of the used army airplanes for instructional purposes in our high school vocational agriculture department.

Last Saturday was another red-letter day for Meeker Airport Manager Gary Coulter as he added another plane to his fleet to meet the growing demands of the area.

Dirck Garcia, No. 80, left end for the Meeker Cowboys, almost broke loose for a quick Meeker touchdown in the second quarter, after catching Paul Edwards’ pass for a 56-yard gain to the Roaring Fork 19. However, the Ram defense stopped the drive on the 11-yard line and it took the Cowboys another three minutes before they got the ball back and were able to tie the score at 7-all.

The Meeker Historical Society will be hosting an open house to let the public take a look at the renovated Garrison Building on Sept. 29.

Long time WREA employee Dick Welle will become the new General Manager with the retirement of Joe Holeyfield. Since 1975, Holeyfield has been the General Manager of the WREA.

My grandmother came here from Wales in 1884 — the Meeker Herald was started in 1885. Outsiders always want to come to this pretty little town and when you get here, you want to change everything. Did you put it to a vote to change the name of the Meeker Herald?

RANGELY TIMES ~ 50 years ago

At a regular meeting of the Rangely Panther Booster Club held last Thursday evening, Cecil Lollar was designated as President for the 1975-76 school year. Almer Hazlewood was selected as Vice-President with Betty Hayden as Secretary and Pat Hejl as Treasurer.

Rangely residents with claims of sonic boom damage may submit them to the Claims Officer at Lowry Air Force Base.

Rod and Lenore Smuts announce the arrival of a baby boy named Jesse Cole, born in Meeker on Monday, Sept. 8.
