President McKinley died at 2:15 o’clock this morning (not 12:15 as previously stated).
TATTOOED WOMEN. The latest fashion is to have butterflies, snakes, etc. etched on the arm. The craze for Japanese things has so far affected some women with much leisure time upon their hands that they are having odd little designs worked upon their arms and shoulders in faint delicate tints. Old-fashioned tattooing was done crudely with a needle, which often inflamed and irritated the skin. Nowadays it is done with an electrical contrivance which etches a design finely and painlessly.
The professions are filling up. The latest addition to Meeker’s professional circle is James C. Gentry, attorney. Mr. G comes here highly recommended.
Musical snails: strange discovery of a French naturalist who claims much for the mollusks.
Place some snails on a pane of glass, he says, and you will find that, as they move over it, they will make musical sounds similar to those which a person can produce by wetting his finger and then rubbing it around a glass tumbler.
Heavy frosts every night during the week.

We have in this state thousands of acres of range, which is covered with sagebrush. The experimenters of the Great Basin Experiment Station look upon sagebrush as a positive evidence of range misuse.
Quite a number of our ranchmen have been unable to get their hay in the stack owing to the numerous rains. Some couldn’t get to cutting for the same reason. In consequence, a lot of hay was spoiled or is very poor. Such handicaps are what put the average farmer short when it comes to liquidating the store bills.
Meeker boys play their first game at Hayden today with Hayden High.
Several ranchmen in the Buford district are going into the sheep business on a small scale and several more are talking woolies these days.

It was a short summer, if one remembers the June 13 snowstorm which hampered garden growers efforts in the area. One of the success stories, however, lies with Frank Taylor who displays a couple of buttercup squashes he raised. Mr. Taylor states he had several 15-17 pounders in his garden. His secret – “good old-fashioned manure.”
The way gas prices are today, anyone who gets less than 15 miles per gallon should have his hood examined!

The 1977 Rangely Days rodeo queens and attendants were selected at tryouts held Sept. 12. Brenda LeBleu, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry LeBleu, was chosen senior queen and her attendants were Mary Beth Hayes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Hayes, and Judy Powell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Powell. Gilleen Nickson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Nicsho, was chosen junior queen. Her attendants will be Jackie Eaves, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Grange Ed Eaves, and Cena Byers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Byers.
Two local boys took trophies from Saturday’s hunt. Bowhunter Rod Cook shot his elk with an arrow in Temple Canyon about 70 miles from Rangely. Kirby Burchett killed his elk with a .30-.30 in Glade Park about 150 miles from here. Both sets of horns appear to be record-breakers.
At this writing, it is not known how the Rangely Town Council will react to Meeker’s position that a 1% county-wide sales tax is favored over a 2% sales tax. If both councils are in agreement of a 1% tax, the voters will be given the opportunity to vote yes or no at the Nov. 2 general election. Both towns presently have their own 1% sales tax which they have promised to rescind if the voter approve the county-wide tax. A county-wide tax would give each town a few thousand dollars more revenue with which to operation their own governments.

Colorado Northwestern Community College has just completed the Fourteenth Annual Cheerleader Clinic. One hundred fifty two boys and girls attended from 21 schools and were accompanied by 19 sponsors.

RIO BLANCO HERALD TIMES ~ 25 years ago
Dear Editor: I want to express my absolute disbelief about the lack of ethics shown by the new Editor of the Rio Blanco Herald, Lois Wymore. Just prior to kickoff, Ms. Wymore came through the gate and asked if she could be admitted free because she was a member of the press. I let her in for free. Simply put, there was NO STORY in the Sept. 14 edition of the paper about the Rangely High School football game. The way I see it, Ms. Wymore, you owe the Rangely High School Athletic Department $3!
Rangely writer note: The person in question was not the editor, but rather the staff writer Jane Hume. I was there to take some pictures, impossible in the rain. The search is on for Mrs. Meeker. Once selected, the community representative will then advance on to compete in the Mrs. Colorado-America Pageant. Interested applicants must live or work in the Meeker area, must be married during the time of the competition, a resident of the state for at least six months, a U.S. citizen and be at least 18 years old. There is no age limit or performing talent.
