The Herald-Democat says a “degenerate” has been captured in Leadville. If we properly understand the meaning of the word “degenerate,” the Leadville police have captured a millionaire’s son, because if he were a poor devil he would be called a “thief” or a “criminal.”
The capable woman is just as likely to develop to perfection in the backwoods as anywhere else. Environment has not much to do with producing her. Like the poet, she is born and not made.
Mrs. James Van Cleef and daughter, Marv Van Cleef, from New York, are visiting with daughter and sister Mrs. John V. Purcell at the latter’s home in Powell Park. (Editor’s Note: We’re pretty sure “Marv” was supposed to be “Mary.” Typos for 125 years and countin’!)

Four Ku Klux Klan orators called on Mayor Shepherd and requested the privilege of holding the meeting on Main Street or in the town park. The mayor, backed by a majority of the council, refused to grant this request. The klansmen then called upon the county commissioners and requested the use of the county park but were again turned down. Both the city council and the commissioners felt that they had no right to allow any such meeting to be held upon public property. The parks are owned by all the people of Rio Blanco County and are not for the use of any organization which draws the line on race and creed.

A sign of a healthy sense of humor is the ability to laugh at yourself while others laugh with you. The laughs started last Saturday at the annual football/volleyball fundraiser when Superman (Klark Kindler) walked in followed by Loretta Lynn (Hallie Turner), Patsy Cline (Vicky Tate), Dolly Parton (Debby Cook) and Buckwheat (Cathy Sullivan). “It was a great way to start the year,” Cook said.
