I don’t know when the notion of choosing a particular word as a kind of mantra for the coming year became a trend, I just know I usually forget to decide until I’m halfway through January. This year, I’m a wee bit ahead of the game, maybe.
One’s chosen word is usually something that inspires us, a reminder of a new habit to set, or a character trait we’re working to adopt. It’s slightly less daunting than making New Year’s resolutions. It’s easier to remember one word than it is a whole list. And if you choose your word well it has the potential to carry you far beyond a limiting list of resolutions.
But how do you choose just one word from the plethora of available options?
I find if I’m paying attention, there’s often a word that’s been popping up in front of me again and again in various places. One year it was “engage,” another year it was “grace.”
If nothing jumps up and hollers at you, ask yourself some questions.
How do you want 2024 to feel?
What do you want more of in 2024?
What do you want less of in 2024?
Some possibilities: adapt, bloom, create, dream, energize, flow, grow, humility, insight, journey, lightly, maintenance, nourish, organize, progress, quiet, rest, service, train, unify, veracity, wonder, yield and zest.
Your word could even be like a secret code for yourself, something that represents what you’re aiming for in the new year. No one else has to understand it and you’re not obligated to explain it, it’s just for you.
Happy New Year, dear readers.
