A newspaper is a mirror reflecting the public, a mirror more or less defective, but still a mirror. ~ Arthur Brisbane
First, I’m extending my profound gratitude to all of you who have extended prayers and well wishes to Caitlin after her accident last week. She is on the mend, and we’re all grateful it wasn’t worse.
This week’s column addresses some housekeeping tasks as we continue our quest toward long-term sustainability.
We’re seeking some “citizen journalists” to pick up some news reporting – covering a board meeting here and there, writing some feature stories about our friends and neighbors. Training is available.
Second, it’s time to establish an editorial board, which will eventually become our non-profit board of directors. What is an editorial board? It’s a group of involved and engaged citizens who help guide decisions about news coverage. We’re looking for five individuals who could meet on an as-needed basis, likely no more than once a month. Experience with journalism on some level, knowledge of non-profits, and a clear understanding of the community we serve and the vision of this hyperlocal community newspaper would be helpful.
And last, but not least, if you have sales experience, are a self-starter, and would like to promote our local businesses and support the newspaper on a commission basis, we need you. Ad sales reps work on commission and set their own schedule, making it an ideal opportunity for a retiree or a stay-at-home parent looking to get out of the house.
If any of the above interests you, please drop me an email or stop by the office.
