Inspiration comes in many different forms. It’s inspiring to see people conquer obstacles, rise above adversity, and find success. Expressions of justice, honesty, courage, humility, generosity, integrity, and faith can, and should, inspire us to take the necessary steps for positive change.
Most of us hate change so much we won’t do what it takes to change for the better. We tell ourselves we lack the willpower, or convince ourselves we don’t really need to change that bad and settle for the status quo — survival.
I’ve spent a lot of time trying to generate willpower for various things… diets, exercise programs, savings plans, doing the dishes after Thanksgiving dinner, folding laundry, doing paperwork. I’ve also been so stressed I have to find the willpower to eat.
I’m starting to wonder if, instead of trying to scrape those remnants of old willpower out of the bottom of the jar, we should be looking for inspiration. Perhaps inspiration is the generator of willpower?
In the same frame of mind as making gratitude lists, perhaps we should start keeping track of what inspires us and let those inspirations generate the willpower we need to take that first step toward our goals.
