There may be some science behind the sense time is speeding up, or at least that this summer feels like it has flown by. According to a report from timeanddate.com, on June 29, 2022, the earth completed its fastest rotation since scientists began using atomic clocks to record the speed of earth’s rotation, making it the shortest day on record. Granted, it was only shorter by 1.59 milliseconds, but still!
If those 1.59 milliseconds don’t convince you time is speeding up, the sudden appearance of Halloween decor in stores might. Seriously, already?
There’s a lot more in the report, including information about “leap seconds” which are used to keep time — at least the artificial social construct we call time — in tidy order, and the fact the earth’s rotation seemed to be slowing down 50 years ago, but no one is really sure what’s going on. There’s your interesting information for the week.
