This Saturday before you go to bed, set your clocks (the ones that don’t do it automatically) forward one hour. Yes, the biannual event when we play God with time is upon us – the return of Daylight Saving Time.
It does make one wonder… if “time” can be changed arbitrarily because someone made a law, or by traveling far enough to the east or west, is time really even a thing? Or is it, as some actual physicists have proposed, merely an artificial social construct? There’s even a theory that all things — past, present and future — exist concurrently in the universe, which, is one way we could conceptualize the idea of time travel.
And speaking of changing time and dates for social purposes, did you know that the original Roman calendar had March 15 as New Year’s Day? Julius Caesar (who was assassinated on March 15 by his fellow government officials) changed the calendar, making January 1 the start of the New Year. Dropped the ball on your 2022 resolutions? Just make March 15 your new New Year and start over! Why not?
Those are big thoughts for a small space this week, so back to the reminder to set your clocks forward this Saturday night.
