RBC | HT editor Niki Turner and editor Susan Greene of The Colorado Independent have received the Carolyn C. Mattingly Award for Mental Health Reporting by the National Press Association for their 2019 work on “Through the Cracks: a stranger, a police shooting, and a rural town’s silence.”
“Through the lens of one tragic police-shooting, this collaborative journalism project was able to peel back the layers to show how warning signs are ignored, how rural towns are unequipped to handle mental illness and how families struggle with too few choices,” judges said.
The award recognizes excellence in mental health reporting, and honors the memory of Carolyn C. Mattingly, a Potomac, Maryland, philanthropist and activist.
From the National Press Association’s website:
“Mattingly’s family decided to establish the award in the aftermath of her tragic death in 2014. The award is open to any U.S.-based journalist at a U.S.-based news organization, including print, broadcast and online journalists.
The award recognizes exemplary journalism that illuminates and advances the understanding of mental health issues and treatments.”
Past winners have included the Tampa Bay Times and Sarasota Herald-Tribune, Buzzfeed, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and NOLA.com | The Times Picayune.
