RANGELY | The Rangely High School girls’ varsity basketball team increased their record to 3-1 after beating the Plateau Valley Cowboys 56-41; the JV team also won and remains undefeated. The varsity will cross the state line to play in the Manila Holiday Classic tournament this weekend in Manila, Utah, playing the host team Friday at 5:30 p.m.
“Solid defense forced 17 turnovers, which led to a strong first half,” Rangely head coach Quinton Kent said about the 36-18 lead the Panthers had at halftime against Plateau Valley. “It also helped that we were balanced on offense with seven of our ten players scoring.”
Rangely senior Katye Allred scored 14 points, as did Katelyn Brown (nine points coming from three baskets behind the three-point arch), while sophomore Skylar Thacker also finished in double figures with 10. Senior Lindzey Thacker scored eight, senior Sydney Shaffer and sophomore Kaylalle Wyman each finished with four points and sophomore Kassidee Brown had two.
“On the defensive end, everyone contributed with solid ball pressure and we rarely gave them two shots in any given possession, meaning we rebounded well,” Coach Kent said.
The elder Thacker pulled down eight rebounds, Allred recorded seven and Kassidee Brown pulled down six.
“It was a good team win,” Coach Kent said.
Coach Kent said his JV team remains undefeated after winning their game against Plateau Valley by “double digits.”
