The tradition of April Fool’s Day rolls all the way back to 1582, when Charles IX reformed the calendar and moved the New Year to January 1. Some of the more, shall we say, rebellious, among the people refused to comply with the calendar change and continued to celebrate the new year on April 1. Those folk became the subject of ridicule and practical jokes.
