At a special board meeting on Monday, the Meeker Board of Education honored outgoing board members Dr. Bob Dorsett and Kevin Amack for their service to the school district and swore in new members Heather Sauls and Joe Nieslanik.
Bill deVergie was nominated and accepted as the new board president, replacing Amack. Tom Allen was nominated and accepted as vice president and Hanna Borchard as secretary/treasurer. The newly seated board, which also includes Hanna Borchard, Ann Franklin and Tony Theos, made appointments to various boards and committees.
Superintendent Chris Selle provided a brief update for the board regarding the Meeker High School student who brought a gun to school a few weeks ago, noting that the student has been expelled for the remainder of the school year. The family will receive educational support for the student. The board opted not to go into executive session for further discussion of the situation.
Mallari Arnold was accepted as a certified and classified substitute.
Following the regular special meeting, the board entered into work sessions for policy discussions, a self-evaluation form for school board members and the reading of a letter from Amack regarding “best board practices.”
A special legislative session called by the governor following the failure of Proposition HH may cause a delay in special districts receiving their assessed valuation and certifying mill levies. The Meeker district has four separate mill levies, three of which are set dollar amounts. For those three — a mill levy override passed in the 1990s and the two bonds for the elementary school and high school — the mill levy changes based on property valuations. The other mill levy covers general expenses and is frozen at a set rate.
Other topics discussed in the work session were upcoming capital projects, employee hiring practices and updates, and more.
The district is seeking input via a community survey, which is available online until the end of the month. The survey is open to students, parents, Meeker High School graduates, school staff and community members and will be available through the end of the month at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/7KJ8CVM.
