Community News Roundup ~ Aug. 28, 2025

Tuesday was National Dog Day, so here’s Nellie the Newshound enjoying a pup cup last week during our weekly trip to pick up the papers. She won’t get to ride along for a while because classes are back in session for this late-returning college student.

It’s been wonderful to finally have monsoon rains make an appearance, just in time for Labor Day weekend and the Meeker Classic Sheepdog Trials, which start next Wednesday. Meeker is open for business, so if you’re not already here, next week is a great time to take a trip to the Classic!

We’ve got more fire news this week, as Jared and Ed were able to go on tours to see some of what’s involved in remediation after a wildfire. Suffice to say, getting the fire put out is not the end of the assignment.

On that note, there’s a meeting on Thursday at the firehouse in Meeker from 1-3 p.m. for landowners impacted by the fires. And business owners, ag producers, land owners, etc., who suffered losses or damage as a result of the wildfires are urged to complete a survey so those losses can be reported for disaster impacts and needs (see links below).

Also back this week are lots of high school sports, and one sporting event I missed in the mad rush to put the paper together. If you’ve got a young wrestler in the house, the parent meeting for Athlos Life is Sept. 10 at Meeker High School at 7 p.m. Mark your calendars!

This weekend, plan to attend one (or more!) of the performances of Matilda in the MHS auditorium. Tickets are $7 and shows are at 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
