Unlike Rangely’s Kenney Reservoir, Rio Blanco Lake, which is 18 miles west of Meeker, may or may not have ice in the middle that would allow ice fishing. It would be tough to go ice fishing on Rio Blanco because the first 12 to 15 feet from the shore are wide open water with no visible ice bridges to get out to the middle of the lake. It looks like ice fishing may be over for the winter on both lakes, but that isn’t stopping anglers from fishing from the shores.
Kenney Reservoir, located about nine miles east of Rangely, had soft ice near the dam on Saturday and wide open water on the east end of the lake. There were lots of birds and just a few fishermen casting from the bank as most of the lake has not yet broken open while the ice is too thin for ice fishing.
