Panther tracksters continue to improve times, scores

The Rangely Panthers had a busy week with several athletes heading to Rifle Wednesday for a JV meet, then several heading to Coal Ridge Friday for a meet and then Saturday the Panthers hosted a meet.

“It was a busy week, but one with lots of improvements, and one where we learn how to push even if we are tired,” said head coach Beth Scoggins.

The week started with six athletes heading to Rifle. The athletes consisted of mostly freshman and sophomores which gives them a chance to compete against athletes their own age.

Angelina Peck pole vaulted for first time in more than three weeks at a meet. She cleared opening height then was able to get two more heights, she was able to clear 6 feet. She also ran the 100-meter dash, long jumped and triple jumped. Chloe Goshe competed in the triple jump for the first time and did really well, then ran the 100 dash, 300-meter hurdles and long jump. Dixie Rhea threw the discus for the first time as well as ran the 200-meter dash and long jumped. Chloe Filfred worked on some speed with the 100 dash as well as the 400-meter dash.  Brooke Filfred threw the shot put, discus and ran the 100 dash. Brent Cantrell also competed in the shot put, discus and 100 dash.

Friday coaches Colt Allred and Boydstun took seven athletes to the Coal Ridge Invitational to get an extra meet. Many of the athletes earned new season best times and score. Angelina Peck had another chance to pole vault and cleared 6-3 for personal best and school record. Timothy Scoggins attempted pole vault, but wasn’t able to clear opening height. He did get a new personal best in the triple jump with a jump of 32-9.5. Marshall Webber earned a new personal best in the 110 high hurdles with a time of 16.93 placing ninth. Riley Boydstun got a new season best in the discus with a throw of 129-9 placing fifth and then placing seventh in the shot with a throw of 39-9. Makenze Cochrane had a good day of throwing with a throw of 102-3 taking sixth place in discus then a throw of 32-9 for ninth place. Breanna Davies threw a 35-3 taking third in the shot and a new personal record.

This year the Rangely Invitational played host to eight teams ranging from 1A schools to 4A schools on Saturday, April 20. There was a lot of good competition as the Rangely athletes defended their home turf. The girls took sixth place while the boys took seventh place.

“We had a lot of our athletes placing but with us being such a small team it is hard to compete against teams with 40 plus athletes,” Scoggins said.

For the boys, senior Marshall Webber took first in both hurdling events as well as getting new personal records. In the 110 hurdles, he ran a 16.61 and in the 300 hurdles, he ran a 43.02. Riley Boydstun, senior, took first in the discus with a throw of 128-4 and then fourth in the shot with a 39-9.5. Freshman Timothy Scoggins took sixth in the high jump. He also got a new personal best in the long jump for a jump of 16-4.5 and 200 dash 27.59. Brent Cantrell didn’t place but earned a personal best in the discus with a throw of 52-6.

The girls had lots of placers as well as personal bests. For the senior girls, Makenze Cochrane took two fourth places, one in shot 32-1.5 and one in discus 98-3 and had a new seasonal best in the 100 dash.  Breanna Davis took third in the shot for a throw of 32-4 and had a new personal best in the discus. Eleana Forbes didn’t place but had personal best in the discus and 100 dash. For the juniors, Hannah Wilkie placed first in the 800-meter run with a new school record of 2:19.43. Chloe Filfred ran the 3,200 placing sixth with a time of 15:42.34. Audrey Patch got a new personal best in the 100 dash as well as the 200 dash. Dixie Rhea, sophomore, placed sixth in the 100 dash for a new seasonal best time of 13.33. Rhea also placed third in the 200 dash for a time of 27.46.  Freshman Mary Scoggins led the team in points with a first place in the triple jump and a sixth place in the long jump. Scoggins’ triple jump was a season’s best of 32-11.25 and her long jump was 14-7. Chloe Goshe placed ninth in the 100 hurdles and got a personal best in the long jump of 13-7 and triple jump of 29-9.  Brooke Filfred got two personal bests, one in the 100 dash and the discus 70-0. Angelina Peck earned a new personal best in the triple jump with a 26-2.

The girls put together some relay teams: the 800 sprint medley and the 4×400. The 800 sprint medley was made up of Chloe Goshe, Dixie Rhea, Skylar Thacker and Mary Scoggins; they took fourth place overall with a time of 2:01.13. The 4×400 took first with a new season’s best of 4:28.18, which was made up of Dixie Rhea, Mary Scoggins, Hannah Wilkie and Skylar Thacker.

The team will be competing at the Clint Wells Invitational on Friday, April 26 in Craig.
