Bring your own bags or pay extra at larger stores in Colorado

RBC | “Paper or plastic?” It’s been 40 years since retailers started asking customers if they wanted a paper bag or a plastic bag to carry their purchases home from the checkout counter. The shift from paper bags to an almost exclusive dependence on plastic bags took years, but by the late 1990s big box stores often had huge depositories for used plastic bags. In the 2000s stores started promoting the use of reusable bags, often branded with the store’s logo, that were available for purchase at checkout. The goal? Reduce waste going to landfills, and reduce the use of single use plastic.
Beginning Jan. 1, 2023, most Colorado retailers will be required to charge a 10¢ fee for every plastic or paper bag dispensed to their customers.
