Rangely’s Brown takes sixth at state

RANGELY I Coaches are always looking for improvement. That’s why Derek Stolworthy, the Rangely Junior High wrestling coach, couldn’t be happier with his team.
“Throughout the course of the season, it was like night and day, from the first practice to the state tournament,” Stolworthy said. “They listened well and they were eager to learn. They actually formed into a unit. That’s something, to be able to form that unity in such a short time, and they accomplished that.”
Capping off the season was a sixth-place finish by Trevor Brown at last Saturday’s state tournament in Denver. He wrestled at 145 pounds.
“He did well. He did really well,” Stolworthy said of Brown.
Three other Panther wrestlers competed at state, but didn’t place – Blade Rose at 70 pounds, Heath Peters at 75 and Ryan Wilczek at 152.
“I was proud of all of ’em. It was just tough. Some very good competition,” Stolworthy said of the state tournament. “But it was good for them to get in there.”
The progress of this year’s team has Stolworthy excited about the future.
“If we keep the guys that we have, we will continue to look good,” the RJH coach said. “We’ll bring some of those kids up to varsity. Then when those kids get to be juniors and seniors, I believe we’re gonna be at the state level, but we have to keep them going.”
