RANGELY | Rangely Police Department reported heavy police activity west of River Road at 1:35 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11, on their Facebook page, asking residents west of River Road to stay in their homes or away if they were not home at the time.
According to witnesses, there was a barricade set up in the area of Halfturn Road.
At 2:27 p.m., RPD told the HT they were unable to provide any further information. The Rio Blanco County Sheriff’s Office and an ambulance were also on-scene, according to witnesses.

This evening, Rangely Police Department issued a “press release” Facebook post.
According to the post, a call came in at 11:33 a.m. this morning for a disturbance on West Main and Halfturn Road after a 911 call was received. A woman stated she had been attacked by her husband, he had attempted to stop her from calling 911, and had then retreated into their residence where a loaded handgun was located.
According to RPD, their officers made several attempts to contact the man, but he refused to speak to officers or answer the door.
RPD, Rio Blanco County Sheriff’s Office, and Colorado Parks and Wildlife created a perimeter blockade “for the safety of the citizens of Rangely,” according to the press release. The information was posted to the RPD Facebook page at 1:35 p.m.
The lockdown did not affect Parkview Elementary School, but it did affect bus routes and students who walk home from school who live in the area. RPD stated parents were notified by the school about pick-up arrangements.
An arrest warrant was requested and granted, as well as a search warrant to enter and remove the man from the residence. RPD used force to enter the residence after the man refused to comply. After being detained, the man was transported to the Moffat County Jail on several charges.
The alert was lifted at 5:25 p.m. according to another Facebook post by RPD.
“This is an isolated incident and there is no danger to the community at this time,” RPD stated.
