A letter sent to Meeker High School parents Monday notified them that a Meeker High School student brought an unloaded firearm to school. According to the letter, the firearm was in the student’s backpack. Other students shared this information with school staff. Upon receiving this information, the backpack was in possession of Meeker High School administration within seconds, prior to the start of the school day. The Meeker Police Department also responded within minutes and took the student into custody. At no point were any threats made or posed to Meeker High School students or staff.
“Meeker High School students acted admirably in this scenario by sharing information with school staff. Meeker High School staff employed sound judgment to ensure no threat existed, take possession of the backpack, and inform local law enforcement. Following these initial steps, we are communicating factual information to families.
