MEEKER | The Meeker Town Board of Trustees approved one ordinance, tabled another for transparency concerns, and considered a wide range of policy and operational issues during its regular meeting.
Board members approved zoning and subdivision regulation updates but voted to table final approval of broader municipal code updates. The action followed the closing of a public hearing after officials acknowledged an error in the posted time for a prior work session and technical issues that prevented the public call-in number from working during the meeting. The board cited transparency and public access concerns in its decision to delay approval.
Under new business, the board approved donations to two community events. Mindy Finley, representing the Meeker Golf Association’s Love of the Course fundraiser, requested support for the annual event, which will be held Saturday, July 25, to avoid conflicts with local sports. The fundraiser raised nearly $20,000 last year, with the town contributing $3,000. On a motion by Amanda Smith, seconded by Jessica Browning, the board approved another $3,000 donation.
The board also approved a $5,000 donation to Meeker Mustang Makeover following a presentation by Melissa Kindall, the organization’s new executive director, and board president Jane Turnburke. Now in its eighth year, the event has grown from a one-day program into a three-day competition and training event and has drawn national attention in recent years. Trustee Amanda Smith recused herself from the vote, as she volunteers for the program.
The board received an update on a required water supply analysis tied to the town’s junior and conditional water rights, which are reviewed in water court approximately every six years. Officials said the analysis will be necessary to demonstrate ongoing demand and prevent forfeiture of those rights in future proceedings. Staff have begun seeking cost estimates for the study.
Trustees also voted to cancel the regular municipal election after only incumbents submitted petitions for the open mayor and trustee seats. Travis Day, Chris Lockwood, Jeff Madison and Amanda Smith will be sworn in April 21, as allowed by state statute.
Public works updates included the return of Landon Archuleta to replace a departing employee, the resignation of another staff member for a county position, and plans for a free community cleanup day on April 10 sponsored by GO Services. The board approved a $4,000 expenditure for document destruction services at the event.
During the land-use and municipal code workshop the previous week, trustees discussed potential updates including park policies, online payments, narrow street parking concerns, wildfire mitigation standards, animal regulations, and zoning changes. Several residents spoke about the impacts of possible on-street parking restrictions on narrow streets, particularly on Seventh Street. Board members generally favored handling such issues on a case-by-case basis rather than adopting a blanket ordinance.
Additional topics included certain natural medicine establishments as conditional uses in industrial zones, clarifying dog noise standards, correcting liquor regulations to align with state law, and considering dark-sky protections with limited enforcement requirements. Several items, including residential water usage definitions, fire pit regulations and some zoning questions, were tabled for further review.
