MEEKER | Meeker trustees heard a presentation by Colorado Northwestern Community College (CNCC) President Dr. Lisa Jones during the first meeting of 2023 on Tuesday, Jan. 10.
Jones presented CNCC’s updated strategic plan, noting how aspects of their plan may align with the Town’s plan. Part of the new strategic plan includes the possibility of expanding or adding programs to address unmet workforce needs in the region, including surrounding counties in Utah and Wyoming.
Jones said they are “getting back to our vision of providing a unique education that is grounded and rooted in the Colorado experience.”
The college is seeking grant funding, community partnerships, and said “we want to have a larger presence in Meeker.”
Trustee Wendy Gutierrez asked about CNCC’s relationship with Colorado Mountain College (CMC). The Moffat County Junior College Board has asked CMC for a feasibility study to determine if the Craig community would be better served by a different college system. Jones said if everything were to be approved for Craig to join the CMC district, the process would take a year or more.
In new business, trustees appointed Police Chief Eddie Thompson to the E-911 board and reviewed a grant application for the CDOT Revitalizing Main Street program for a capital improvement project to upgrade downtown lighting fixtures. Buena Vista was awarded the same grant in 2021 for a similar project. Savings from changing the luminaires on the decorative poles is estimated at up to $60K.
