Hobbs wins bugling contest

Meeker Chief of Police Bob Hervey and Lieutenant Phil Stubblefield stand with Kesston Hobbs, the overall grand champion of the elk bugling and camouflage competition.

MEEKER I Kesston Hobbs, a fourth-grader at Meeker Elementary School, was named the overall grand champion at the 2011 elk bugling and camouflage contest sponsored by the Meeker Police Department and White River Electric Association.
Lieutenant Phil Stubblefield of the Meeker Police Department started the competition many years ago and was the organizer of this year’s event, assisted by Kathy Sizemore and Meeker Chief of Police Bob Hervey.
More than 25 first- through fifth-graders bugled twice for judges Jeff McGuire, Jarrett Waldref and Trey Morris, who also judged the camouflage competition. Each grade had a winner in the bugling contest but the camo contest was combined and the top six were given awards.
Hobbs was the best bugler in his class and won the camouflage contest before being named the grand champion.
The WREA provided the awards, which included trophies and ribbons and all the door prizes given to the contestants through a drawing process.
“It’s a lot of fun,” Stubblefield said.
