Rubber Ducky Race benefits schoolhouse project
MEEKER | “I see them! Here they come!” Young voices rang out from the riverbanks below and atop Meeker’s Tenth Street bridge as little yellow rubber duckies came bobbing around the river bend. A bit of brisk and wet weather didn’t dampen the spirits of the participants in the MVB Fall Festival activities. This excitement makes the Rebuild the Belfry Rubber Ducky Race fund raising campaign a success for the Rural Schools Project team.
Community support continues to be tremendous through many fundraisers for the restoration of Coal Creek School. Assistance with the Rubber Ducky Race included extra help on some technical difficulties with novices trying to capture the speedy little ducks. Luckily an ace reporter with a good camera lens was able to capture the winning duck numbers.
The Meeker Elementary students were especially invited to help raise funds needed for rebuilding the belfry on the historic Coal Creek School now under restoration. With enthusiastic support from staff and parents, more than $200 was raised as children collected spare change to sponsor duckies in the race at the Fall Festival.
Coal Creek School is expected to be ready next fall for students to use during special Colorado and Meeker area historical studies and activities. The Rural Schools Project team has participated in Old Fashioned School Day activities with second graders the past few years and anticipates using the one room school house will greatly enhance the experience.
