MEEKER I Matrix Oil Company is working with the town and county to obtain approval to drill a well on Sulphur Creek. The drilling rig will take two weeks to be installed, and completion is expected at the end of May.
“We are working with them on accessing the well site(s) through the town. Strangely, there has not been any oil rig activity through town (except passing through on the highway), so this is a first for us,” said Town Administrator Scott Meszaros.
The public works department is battling a rodent infestation at Ute Park. Ground, or garrison, squirrels are burrowing rodents that leave dangerous holes in pasture areas.
“They’re as bad out there as I’ve ever seen them,” said trustee Regas Halandras at the April 17 board meeting.
Also on the meeting’s agenda, Joe Cardile, pastor of New Creation Church of Meeker, asked the board about the possibility of using the Main Street elementary school site for a not-for-profit daycare facility and to provide after-school activities.
“We just wanted to come and inquire and see what might be possible,” Cardile said. “We’ve been approached by several families in the community who say it’s a growing need.”
“This is new and different,” said Mayor Mandi Etheridge. “I don’t know that we’ve had any suggestions or requests to lease the building.”
Trustee John Strate expressed a concern about the future of the building in the long-term and what has been discussed about possible uses. The board requested further information about what would be required to get the building inspected and approved.
