RANGELY I After having a week off the Rangely Panthers competed in the two day multi-league meet on May 6-7 in Rifle, Colorado. The meet had 29 teams but was divided into 1A/2A, 3A and 4A, the Panthers competed in the 1A/2A division. The Panthers had 24 athletes competing in almost all the different events.
The girls team placed second overall behind Cedaredge. The team was led by seniors Mary Scoggins and Hayley Burr. Scoggins took two first places: long jump (16-6.5) and triple jump (33-10) then took second in the 400-meter dash (1:03.09). Burr placed second in the 300 hurdles (51.74), fourth in the 100-meter hurdles (17.58) and eighth in the 200-meter dash (30.15). Junior Kyrah Phelps was a big help also, scoring second in discus (98-1) and third in shot put (29-0). Rylee Allred was third in discus (96-5) and fifth in shot put (28-2.5). Sophomore Kastyn Dembowski scored well in the high jump with a new personal best of (4-9.5) taking fifth place, then placed fifth in long jump (14-4.5) and sixth in pole vault (6-6). Freshman Ashlynn Ducey took seventh place in the 100 dash (13.92), fourth in the 400 dash (1:04.09). Miah Wren scored some points in the pole vault (7-0) taking fifth place. She also competed in the triple jump (28-1.5). Annika Cantrell took second in high jump (4-9.5). Macy Morgan took seventh in the 3,200-meter (19:15.21) and ran the 1,600-meter (98:54.57) and the 800-meter (3:40. 52) Other girls competing in individual events were MacKenzie Manchester in the 100 hurdles (21.57), discus (79-7) and shot put (26-2.5). Emma Smith: 100 dash (14.76) and triple jump (29-0.75). Ryann Mergelman: 200-meter dash (30.73), long jump (12-11).
The girls put together three relays that helped with the scoring, a sprint medley relay, 4×200 and 4×400. The sprint medley took fourth place (1:59.52) with Smith, Mergelman, Ducey and Wren. The 4×200 took eighth place (2:02.34) with Smith, Cantrell, Mergelman and Dembowski. The 4×400 took second place (4:30.34) with Burr, Ducey, Wren and Scoggins.
Mary Scoggins was voted the female athlete of year for the 1A/2A Western Slope league. “Mary has had a great year of running and competing this year. She has worked hard during the season as well as out of season. She gets along with a lot of the other girls from other teams. Very seldom do you not see Mary on the infield without a group of girls from other teams around her. As coach and mom I couldn’t be more proud of her,” said head coach Beth Scoggins.
The boys team placed seventh out of 12 teams. For some reason several of them struggled on Friday but were able to come back and perform well on Saturday. Freshman James Talbot was the leading scorer for the boys placing second in the 3,200 (10:36.36) and third in the mile (5:12.08). Kenyon Cochrane placed second in the shot put with a 39-10. Fisher Winder placed third in triple jump (36-9) and competed in the long jump (16-8.25). Timothy Scoggins placed fifth in high jump (5-6) and also ran the 400 (59.30). Anthony Dorris placed fifth in long jump (17-11), he also triple jumped (32-9). Also competing for the Panthers were Aydan Christian in the 200 dash (27.13) and long jump (15-7). Joseph Adams shot put (28-7) and discus (68-7.5). Justin Allred discus (76-5.5) he ran the 800 run (2:27.47) and the 400 dash (1:03.23). Colton Noel competed in the 800 (2:18. 13) and the 1,600 (5:37.36). Clay Allred ran the 800 (2:15.81). Kevin Wren competed in the 200 dash (27.16) and triple jump (32-5).
The boys put together three relay teams: 4×800, 4×200 and the 4×400. The 4×800 was made of T. Scoggins, Noel, C. Allred and Talbot. They took third place with a 9:23.37. The 4×200 took eighth place (1:44.57) with Christian, Winder, Dorris and K. Wren. The 4×400 took sixth place with T. Scoggins, Dorris, C. Allred and K. Wren.
“I am super proud of how everyone performed this weekend. Everyone went out and did their best even with the wind blowing. I couldn’t have asked for better, they are a great group of athletes and I am proud to be their coach,” Scoggins said.
The Rangely Panthers will be going to two meets this week. The Olathe Invitational on Thursday and the Cardinal Invitational on Saturday in Grand Valley. This will be the last week of the regular season for the Panthers
