Jason Purkey, Sam Hale, Danny Garcia, Mindy Burke and Todd Morris, pictured in front of an antique White River Electric Association line truck, won a putt-off to win the 29th annual WREA golf tournament on Friday at Meeker Golf Course.MEEKER I For the past 29 years, the White River Electric Association has brought employees, friends and business associates together for a fun, yet competitive five-person scramble golf tournament at Meeker Golf Course each June. On Friday, two of the 14 teams held a putt-off to determine the winner.
The local team of Mindy Burke, Danny Garcia, Sam Hale, Todd Morris and Jason Purkey won the putt-off against Relda Coulter, Leif Joy and brothers Stan, Greg and Kirk Wyatt to take first-place honors.
Diana Crosthwaite, Luke Dolan, Tod Gould, Joe Michalewicz and Tom Tuley took third-place honors. Alan Michalewicz, recently hired as the new general manager of White River Electric Association, was in Meeker for the annual WREA golf tournament. Michalewicz is currently the vice president of engineering and operations for Black Hills Electric Coop in Custer, S.D., and will relocate to Meeker with his wife and family later this summer. Michalewicz will start at WREA Aug. 1, and work in tandem with current general manager Dick Welle, until Welle retires Oct. 1, 2013.There were “Closest to the Pin” and “Long Drive” contests held on several holes during the tournament, creating eight more winners.
Bill de Vergie was closest to the pin on No. 2, Robin Jervey was closest on No. 4 and Jesse Jackson was closest to the pin on Meeker’s third Par 3, No. 7. Bill Hirt had the longest putt on No. 5.
Ron Kelly Crawford won the long drive contest on No. 3 in the men’s division and Irene Kilbane won the female division. On the back nine, Todd Morris had the longest drive on No. 3 and Tonya Morris drove the ball further than any other woman on the course.
Several of the golfers in the WREA tournament spent the next two days playing in the Marvine Ranch two-man best-ball tournament.
