RIO BLANCO COUNTY DAYS GONE BY

The Meeker Herald — 75 years ago
• Game Warden Gentry arrested Wheaton Clark and Loyal Mack on Sunday for killing deer out of season.
• Nearly everyone in Meeker was out Monday evening viewing the total eclipse of the moon. The night was perfectly clear and the moon was full which made the eclipse perfect. It has been 50 years since the last total eclipse of the moon and astronomers state it probably will be that long before there will be another perfect eclipse.

• The Meeker Fire Department was called out twice this past week. First for a grass fire on the lots just west of Sulphur Creek on Main Street. Sunday night a fire was discovered in a storage shed at the rear of the property owned by Regas Halandras on Park between Seventh and Eighth streets. Both fires did little damage.
• The Sterling Brothers Circus is coming to Meeker and will set up on the Barrett ranch property across the road south of the Gentry Motel.
• Ken Dunbar, who operates Ken’s Taxidermy and Store on the Government Road 10 miles south of Meeker, has taken the agency for the new “Sportsman’s Cycle.” These motorcycles are designed for use by sportsmen in the hills.
• The weather past week has been dry and hot and when we say hot we mean near a record high for this section. It was 94 on Saturday of last week and again on Wednesday.

• Approximately 120 Meekerites showed up to discuss Dr. Randy LeBlanc’s resignation with the Pioneers Hospital Board. The mood of the audience turned ugly shortly after board president Don Hamilton announced that because most of the discussions concerning Dr. LeBlanc were held in executive session, the board would not be able to provide the public with the exact reasons why LeBlanc wasn’t offered a contract to work with the Meeker Family Clinic.
• The Sheridan and Watt picnic was held on July 4th as usual. This picnic has been held at different places since 1942. Some of the attendees included 5-year-old Tyrell Turner, great great-grandson of Jim and Pauline Sheridan; Ashley Cobb, 4, great-granddaughter of Tom and Liz Watt.
• Five Meeker swimmers won medals in Grand Junction last week: Wilson Hahnenberg, Houston, Casey and Philip Stubblefield, and Kevin Borchard.

Rangely Times — 50 years ago
• Bernard Hazelwood was appointed to the Rangely Re-4 board of education.
• Peggy Joan and Patricia Lee Duckett, twin daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Duckett, celebrated their fifth birthday July 13, 1960.
• Mr. and Mrs. Bob Fread are the parents of a baby boy born July 10 in the Rangely Community Hospital. The baby weighed 6 pounds 13 ounces and was named Steve Earl. Mrs. Fread is the former Sue Collins.

Rangely Times — 30 years ago
• Due to continuing difficulties with the new water meters, the town is still unable to charge customers with metered water rates.
• Paraho Development Corporation selected for a $3 million oil shale grant.

Rangely Times — 20 years ago
• A group of northwestern Colorado river runners were recently charged with floating the Yampa River in Dinosaur National Monument without a river running permit.
• Public notice: Now that Meeker is no longer a long distance phone call the local transfer number to the Meeker courthouse is no longer in service.
