Rio Blanco County Days Gone By

The Meeker Herald — 125 years ago
• Hudson, Jewett and Wolfe is the name of the livery and feed firm about to start in Meeker shortly. The boys were placing lumber in position this week.
• Dr. Thorton and family arrived Tuesday and the doctor will hang out his shingle.
• Messrs. Beard and Ames are building a business house on Main St. east of the Post Office.
• W. H. Miller and family, formerly of Fort Collins, have located on Milk Creek. Mr. Miller is interested in cattle.

The Meeker Herald — 50 years ago
• Mrs. Don Longley, owner and manager of Don’s Market, has leased the meat department of her store to Mr. Bob Blagg. The Blagg family came to Meeker from Denver and have rented one of the Regas Halandras apartments. Mr. and Mrs. Blagg have four children; daughter Betty, 14; son John, 9; daughter Becky, 5; and son Ricky, 2.
• The Hospital Board of Pioneers hospital have employed Mr. Harold Wright as the new administrator for Pioneers Hospital, replacing Mr. J.H. Worstell.

The Meeker Herald — 25 years ago
• The United States Marine Band presented an afternoon concert Monday for the area’s young people and an evening performance for the adults.
• Outgoing Pioneers Hospital administrator John Osse is tired — of rules and regulations from Medicare. He will complete his last day of work Friday, to be replaced by Bill Parker.
• Connie Hughes, Rio Blanco County health nurse, has recently been elected president of the Colorado County Nurses Association for the state of Colorado for the upcoming year.
• Cowboys drop homecoming game to Sailors, 21-6.

Rangely Times — 50 years ago
• Lloyd Hahn, 62, of Rangely, became the 31st member of the Nebraska Sports Hall of Fame for his performance at the Olympic games in Amsterdam in 1928.
• Letter writing week is Oct. 2-8. “A letter remains the most economical, longest lasting, and sincerest means of extending greetings, communicating social news and exchanging ideas,” said Postmaster Minta Gerry.
• From Gabbie Gertie: “Pioneer Pete also says hunters are not all alike. For instance, if a hunter talks loud, wears a big hat and says the deer are too small, he’s from Texas. If he wears a beret, dark glasses, uses a long cigarette holder and has painted toenails he’s from Los Angeles. If he looks like he’s from Texas, but doesn’t talk, he’s from Oklahoma. If he carries a gun in one hand and a mint julep in the other, he’s from Kentucky.”

Rangely Times — 30 years ago
• 1980 county valuation set at $211,348,130.
• Water meters main topic at Town Council meeting.
• Mr. and Mrs. Trenton Day wish to announce the forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Holly Ann Day, to Martin Dean Talbott.
• 1980 Rangely homecoming victory: Rangely 28, Battle Mountain 12. “Vince Wilczek did a beautiful job of kicking the ball. Charlie Cady did a good job at quarterback.”

Rangely Times — 20 years ago
• The past few weeks have seen four new businesses open on Main Street and one just off Main. It is indeed a welcome sight to have these entrepreneurs take over vacant space and expand the goods and services available to our town.
• Up With People tours 30 Colorado cities.
• 1990 homecoming king Milton Prator, queen Susan Polston.
