• There are a number of people in Meeker who feel that this community should sponsor and support a “United Fund Drive” once a year and eliminate the solicitation of funds for all the individual drives that will plague them between now and next summer.
• Colorado won a $27.5 million victory in the U.S. Supreme Court Monday, when the court upheld the Colorado severance tax on oil and natural gas production to be a valid and legal tax. The California Co., part of the corporate chain of Standard Oil Co., had appealed the decision in the Colorado Supreme Court.
• The Cowboys broke a halftime deadlock to down the Craig Bulldogs 21-7.

• Elk kill down as expected; sales off about 30 to 40 percent.
• Stephen Gerald Cordero was sentenced to 29 years in the state penitentiary for the murder of Douglas Lightfoot.

• Author Clive Cussler spoke to fans at the Colorado Authors Lecture Series meeting.

• Hunters are set for a possible record kill this year.
• The RHS student council will be sponsoring a mock election in the near future. There will be an assembly held with speakers for both Kennedy and Nixon.

• Rangely Junior High students took an all-day tour of soil and water conservation practices in the county. They also visited the Upper Colorado Environmental Plant Center near Meeker.
• At the Campus Theatre: “Honeysuckle Rose” starring Willie Nelson, Dyan Cannon and Amy Irving; “The Island”; and Robert Redford in “Brubaker.”
• The Rio Blanco Oil Shale Company started burning the first of three demonstration underground modified in situ retorts on Federal Prototype Oil Shale Tract C-a.

• An anonymous letter that accompanied the recent RDA survey provoked a strong reaction from town trustees and the mayor. The letter said people “are afraid to speak out” because of possible “credit loss in local stores — and at a local bank.” The town “is an eyesore, dirty and unkept.” The letter was signed, “Being taken advantage of in Rangely.”
• CNCC Dinner Theater presents “Mark Twain on Tour.”
• Sue F. Smith was the first place winner in the Kenney Reservoir Photo Contest sponsored by the Rangely Times.
