Rio Blanco County Days Gone By

The Meeker Herald — 125 years ago
• The “84” yellow cabins on Yellow Creek caught fire about 10 a.m. Monday and burned to the ground in less than two minutes.
• Tim Breene arrived on Piceance Wednesday from Leadville. He will make Piceance his permanent home.
• The bar and billiard room attached to the Meeker Hotel presents a metropolitan appearance. The new chandeliers are very handsome.
• The grand ball to be given on Monday, Feb. 22, will be a great success. An elegant supper will be at the Meeker Hotel.

The Meeker Herald — 50 years ago
• The Meeker Chamber of Commerce membership drive resulted in 102 members for the coming year, the largest membership in its history.
• Enter the sewing contest at Oldland & Co. to win a prize.
• This “blue bird weather” continues. The high for the week was 54 and the low was 13 above.
• Mr. Howard H. Joy, who as operated the Ford Agency and Joy Motor Company garage for many years is adding a new business to Meeker, Joy Motor Parts.
• TV benefit dance Friday, Feb. 24 at the I.O.O.F. Hall. All proceeds go to the Meeker TV Association. Admission $1 per person.

The Meeker Herald — 25 years ago
• Larry Steiner, Farm Bureau insurance agent in Meeker, was honored recently for providing outstanding sales and service to his insureds.
• Adding to the spirit of the district wrestling tournament were Meeker cheerleaders Kathy Nelson, Layne Thayer and Carla Seely.
• Heading to the state wrestling competition: Coley Turner, Todd Morris, Lenny Klinglesmith, Jason Steiner, Ladd Klinglesmith, Chris Lines, Justin Seely and Todd Gerloff.

Rangely Times — 45 years ago
• Rangely’s John Sims won the state heavyweight title in the Division II wrestling tournament at Aurora last weekend and was the only Northwest League winner.
• Plans are developing to use some 32 inmates from the Buena Vista reformatory for five months work at Rio Blanco Lake.
• Mrs. Jessie Lancaster was honored with a baby shower for her new baby, Jessie Mark.

Rangely Times — 35 years ago
• Enrollment at CNCC is up 17 percent this year, an increase of 37 students.
• Rangely is going to get a new water plant, to be located east of Douglas Creek with an in-plant capacity for a population of 10,000.
• Pete Etcheverry was chosen and the boy student of the month for January at the Rangely Middle School. Natalie Hefley was chosen as the girl student of the month.
• The Rangely Panthers won two conference games last weekend, to bring their NWL record to 11-1 and overall record to 13-1, best in the league. Rangely and Glenwood Springs are tied for the NWL lead.

Rangely Times — 25 years ago
• Rangely wrestlers turned in an excellent performance at the district tournament in qualifying nine of 12 wrestlers to go to state.
• The Rangely Police Department was notified of a burglary at the Rangely High School. No loss could be determined as of yet. However, damages and clean-up labor could be fairly extensive.
• Shearing School scheduled for March.
