Bear Dance to be held May 16-19
FT. DUCHESNE — The Bear Dance will be held at Ft. Duchesne May 16-19. Everyone is welcome! You can read about Bear Dance at www.smokingriverpowwow.com. Click on the May update link.

Rangely fishing derby set for June 7
RANGELY — The Rio Blanco Water Conservancy District, Rio Blanco Metropolitan Parks and Recreation District and Colorado Division of Wildlife, in conjunction with the State of Colorado Free Fishing Weekend, have scheduled the annual fishing derby for Saturday, June 7.
Registration begins at 8 a.m.. at the Kenney Reservoir Marina, and the fishing derby runs from 8:30-10:30 a.m. Prizes and awards will be handed out between 10:30-11 a.m.
Fishing is an activity that can be enjoyed by everyone. Bring your friends, family, fishing poles and come join us on Saturday for lots of fun. For more information, call the Water Conservancy District office at (970) 675-5055.

rabbit club meets
MEEKER — The Meeker 4-H Poultry and Rabbit Club had its first meeting April 9. The kids did their demonstrations on chicken breeds, parts of a rooster, picking a chicken and picking a rabbit. The next meeting was May 14 at 5 p.m.

Vet Affairs ask for national pause at 3 p.m. Monday
RBC — Monday, May 26, at 3 p.m. local time, major league baseball games will stop, Amtrak train whistles will blast across the country and hundreds of other nationwide participants will encourage Americans to pause for the Memorial Day National Moment of Remembrance. The “moment” was established by an act of Congress, to honor those who died in service to our country.
All citizens, alone or with family and friends, wherever they may be at 3 p.m., local time, are asked to pause for a moment of reflection and rededication to give something back to our country in memory of our nation’s fallen. The goal is to put “memorial” back into Memorial Day. A Gallup poll revealed that only 28 percent of Americans know the meaning of this holiday.

McKinley, Bina earn master’s degrees
MEEKER — Two former Meeker High School graduates received their master’s degrees from Adams State College on May 10. Michaela McKinley and Kelly Bina received their master’s in education degrees with endorsements in language, literacy and cultural diversity.

CNCC Spring art show and sale set
for May 15-17
RBC — Colorado Northwestern Community College students of photography, watercolor and pastel art, as well as quilting, will feature their projects for public viewing pleasure at an opening May 15, from 4-8 p.m. The art show and sale will be held at The Singing Tree Studio upstairs in the Hugus Building. Refreshments will be served during the opening. The Spring Art Show and Sale will also be open Friday, May 16, and Saturday, May 17, from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Mark your calendar now and enjoy the artistic talent in the community.

District judge
finalists selected
RBC — The Ninth Judicial District Nominating Commission has nominated three candidates for a district court judgeship created pursuant to House Bill 07-1054, effective July 1. Nominees Gail Hibbard Nichols of Aspen, Christopher G. Seldin of Basalt and James R. True Jr. of Aspen were selected by the commission May 5.
Under the Colorado Constitution, the governor has 15 days from May 6 within which to appoint one of the nominees as district court judge for the Ninth Judicial District (Garfield, Pitkin and Rio Blanco counties).

Schlumberger buys land in region
DE BEQUE — French oil and gas company Schlumberger closed last week on 394 acres of land south of De Beque, paying $3.75 million. Schlumberger plans to petition De Beque for annexation. The company has plans for a oil and gas support facility on 140 acres and will leave 254 acres as agricultural. The facility could employ as many as 350 full-time employees when built out.
