n J.V Houston expects his stock in next week. Mr. Houston will open up the handsomest store in town. This week he also located a fine ranch just above Frank Sheridan’s.
n J.A. Nicholas placed over the entrance of Tom Watson’s store a very neat raised letter sign Monday.
n Julius Strehlke and Otto Metzger opened the season on the Mesa by turning over about 15 acres of the richest soil in this section.
n It is the general opinion that the Denver and Rio Grande will be running into Denver by August.
n Senator Eddy left for home Thursday morning.

n Cynthia Humbert was the winner of a 4-H dairy calf in the drawing.
n The population of the county jail was increased by three this week. Already the jail is nearly full with eight boarders in the county “hotel.”
n There will be a statewide civil defense alert on Thursday and Friday.
n “A proposed definition of the word ‘newspaper’ has been published in the Federal Register, but we like this one better. It was written by a 6-year-old girl named Diana to a west coast newspaper: ‘Newspapers. We need them so we can know who reks and who drownds and who shoots somebody. And who wants a house or who dies or gets a baby. It tells if your dog is lost. They are good on shelves and to make bond fires. They also do good under a baby’s plate and to keep dogs off things. You can wrap potato peelings in em…’ To which the editor of the paper added: ‘P.S. Diana, they are also good to swat things with, like flies and public officials and things.’”

n The MHS Student Council held their election of officers for the 1986-87 school year which attracted only a limited field of candidates. Amy Batka, president; Justin Seely, vice president; Clint Adams, secretary; and Casey Miller, treasurer.
n Chance William Miller turned 1-year-old on Sunday, April 27.
n Bette James, niece of Jeannie and Jack Calver of Meeker, was crowned Miss Las Animas County of 1986.
n The MHS Student Council held their election of officers for the 1986-87 school year which attracted only a limited field of candidates. Amy Batka, president; Justin Seely, vice president; Clint Adams, secretary; and Casey Miller, treasurer.
n Ladd Klinglesmith, son of Lowell and LoAnn Klinglesmith, has recently been nominated for the Colorado State Farmer Degree.
n For the second game in a row, the MHS baseball team found out that playing in the NWL can be a rough experience as they were pounded 22-0 by the Roaring Fork Rams.

Rangely Times — 60 years ago
n Rangely’s new town council met for the first time Monday. Don Chism, Charles Cary, Bernerd Hazelwood, mayor B.F. Yaeger, town administrator Max Pope, Frank White, Don Rooks and town attorney Carl Smith were present. H.B. Pilcher was absent.
n Winners of the Library Week poster contest were Kathy Yeager, Jodi Mann and George Lee.
n President Johnson signed into law the bill establishing a uniform Daylight Saving Time system for the nation extending from April to October each year. A state my decide by action of its legislature to remain on standard time.
n The engagement of Miss Virginia Lee Turner and Kenneth Shrum has been made known.
n Mr. and Mrs. James Daggett announced the engagement of their daughter Penny Daggett Burdick to Scott Leech, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ron Leech.
n Winning two events each in Saturday’s track meet were sophomore Dale Matrisciano and junior Pete Miller.

n Students inducted into the National Honor Society included Alan Ducey, Casey Klements, Kelly Brown, Kirby Burchett, Lorie Dump, Beth Conroy, Valerie Bock and Brenda Hatch.
n CNCC was officially notified of accreditation in the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
n Now showing at the Campus Theatre: Walt Disney’s “Blackbeard’s Ghost” starring Peter Ustinov, Dean Jones and Suzanne Pleshette. “The Black Bird” starring George Segal, and “The Sky Riders” starring James Coburn and Suzannah York.

Rangely Times — 25 years ago
n The musical “Hello, Dolly” will be presented at the RHS auditorium soon. Dolly will be played by Nikki McBride; Cornelius, Todd Kowlok; Barnaby, Jim Pervical; Horace Vandergelder by Pat Harris; and Ms. Molloy by Shawnee Tomlinson.
n Mr. and Mrs. Dave Lancaster wish to announce the engagement of their daughter Ruta Lea to Terry Lynn Horner, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Horner of Burley, Idaho.
n Dick Hoops competed in the fourth annual JI Case Excavator Rodeo Championship in Phoenix.
n Rangely Middle School students of the month for March were Richard Brannan and Rebecca Belveal.
n Candidates for the WRBM Recreation Center board of directors: Jeanne Smith, Vena Meb Wardell, Dale Howard, Tom Sheeran, Betty Cott and Paula Haddenham.
